Unexpected Economic Surge in September
Argentina's economic activity experienced a robust year-on-year growth of 5% in September 2025, a figure that has notably exceeded market expectations and alleviated concerns of an impending recession. The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) released these encouraging statistics on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.
The monthly economic activity also saw an increase of 0.5% in September compared to August, on a seasonally adjusted basis. This performance was a pleasant surprise for many analysts; economists polled by Bloomberg had projected an annual expansion of just 1.9%, while FocusEconomics noted market expectations were around 2.1%.
Recession Averted and Key Growth Drivers
The positive September data played a crucial role in preventing Argentina from entering a technical recession, which is typically defined by two consecutive quarters of economic contraction. The economy registered an overall growth of 0.5% in the third quarter, largely due to the September surge.
Several sectors were instrumental in driving this economic rebound:
- Fishing: Surged by 58.2%
- Financial Services: Jumped by 39.7%
- Mining: Grew by 8.1%
- Hotels and Restaurants: Increased by 7%
- Real Estate: Expanded by 5%
- Construction: Rose by 4.3%
Despite the overall positive trend, some sectors did experience declines. Industrial manufacturing saw a decrease of 1%, and public administration and defense fell by 0.7%.
Broader Economic Context and Outlook
This unexpected growth comes amidst a period of heightened market volatility, influenced by local and national midterm elections. Earlier in the year, some consultancies had predicted a year-on-year slump for the Argentine economy.
However, international bodies had offered more optimistic forecasts. The World Bank had previously projected Argentina's GDP to grow by 5% in 2025, following two years of recession. Similarly, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) had forecast a 5.2% GDP growth for the country in 2025. Cumulatively, from January to September 2025, Argentina's economic activity has increased by 5.2% compared to the same period last year.

What about inflation? This doesn't tell the whole story.

Declining manufacturing is a huge red flag, despite the headline.

While the 5% growth is certainly a positive surprise and averts recession, it's crucial to see if this momentum can be sustained given past volatility. We need to watch how this impacts inflation and real wages.

It's encouraging to see such strong growth in key sectors like fishing and financial services, which is great for the overall GDP. However, the decline in industrial manufacturing is a concern and suggests some parts of the economy are still struggling.

Beating economic forecasts is a significant achievement and shows some resilience in the Argentine economy. Still, we should remember that international bodies had already predicted high growth for 2025, so this might just be catching up to more optimistic scenarios rather than a true outperformance.

One month doesn't make a trend. Still skeptical.
