Separation Wall Section Collapses Amid Deluge

A section of Israel's separation wall in the southern West Bank partially collapsed on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, following intense heavy rains and flash floods. The structural failure occurred south of Hebron, near the village of Al-Burj, where eyewitnesses reported the complete destruction of a concrete section of the barrier. The collapse was attributed to the rains undermining the wall's foundation and causing water accumulation.

The separation wall, which Israel began constructing in 2002, has been a contentious structure. In 2004, the International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion deeming it illegal.

Widespread Flooding and Disruptions Across the Region

Beyond the wall collapse, the severe weather system brought widespread flooding and disruption across Israel and the Palestinian territories. Landslides caused by the torrential precipitation disrupted traffic on main roads west of Ramallah in the central West Bank, with several vehicles reported damaged, though no injuries were initially reported from these incidents.

In Israel, emergency services conducted dozens of rescues nationwide. Affected areas included:

• Southern Israel: Sections of Route 40, Route 227, and Route 206 were closed due to flooding.
• Central Israel: Route 90 outside Jericho was shut, and rescues took place in Modiin Illit, Beit Shemesh, Kiryat Gat, Kafr Qasim, and Tirat Carmel.
• Northern Israel: Roads flooded in Kiryat Motzkin and Shfaram, where rescues also occurred.
• West Bank Communities: Rescues were carried out in Elkana, a West Bank community, and in Beersheba and Rahat.

A new record for rainfall was set overnight in the center of the country, with 128 millimeters (5 inches) recorded within four hours in the West Bank settlement of Neveh Tzuf. Palestinian meteorologist Qussai Halaika noted that 'wide regions witnessed large amounts of rainfall within a few hours,' with the heaviest precipitation in western parts of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Hebron.

Official Responses and Ongoing Concerns

The Israel Defence Ministry confirmed that forces are operating at the site of the wall collapse and have formulated a temporary operational response. A police source, however, claimed the collapse resulted from alleged negligence by IDF personnel who failed to properly maintain the drainage system beneath the wall, leading to water accumulation. The Defence Ministry countered that 'opening or closing water passages is carried out according to situation assessments and takes into account many variables, primarily preventing the passage of terrorist elements.'

Despite the widespread disruption and damage, no casualties were reported from the wall collapse or the numerous flooding incidents. Meteorological authorities have issued continued warnings regarding flash flood risks in low-lying areas and the potential for further road collapses across the region.
