Prime Minister Carney Accepts Invitation for India Visit
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has accepted an invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to undertake a visit to India in early 2026. The upcoming visit is set to focus on strengthening diplomatic ties and advancing trade discussions between the two nations.
The announcement follows recent engagements between the two leaders, including meetings on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada.
Reviving Trade Relations with Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement
A key objective of Prime Minister Carney's visit will be the formal launch of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Both leaders have expressed confidence that this agreement could significantly boost two-way trade, aiming to more than double it to $70 billion by 2030.
The proposed CEPA is expected to cover a broad range of sectors, including:
- Goods
- Services
- Investment
- Agriculture and agri-food
- Digital trade
- Mobility
- Sustainable development
This renewed focus on trade comes after a period of strained relations between Canada and India. Discussions regarding a trade deal between the two countries have been ongoing for approximately 15 years, with previous talks being downgraded and suspended.
Enhancing Diplomatic and Broader Cooperation
Beyond trade, the visit underscores a commitment to enhancing overall diplomatic relations. Following the return of high commissioners in August 2025, both prime ministers agreed to increase diplomatic staffing levels to address growing consular demands and foster stronger people-to-people connections.
The leaders also welcomed progress in law enforcement dialogue between the two countries. Furthermore, Prime Minister Carney has expressed support for India's upcoming AI Summit in February 2026, indicating Canada's interest in broadening cooperation in technology and innovation. This aligns with the recent announcement of the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation Partnership on November 22, 2025.
The upcoming visit is seen as a significant step in normalizing and strengthening the bilateral relationship between Canada and India, building on recent positive momentum.

It's positive to see renewed diplomatic efforts, yet the focus on trade shouldn't overshadow ongoing concerns about human rights or geopolitical stability in the region.

Risky move. India's track record on trade agreements isn't always stable.

It's about time these two global players worked closer together. Great for innovation.

Too much talk, too little action. Previous attempts failed, why will this be different?

While strengthening ties with India makes sense strategically, the history of stalled negotiations raises questions about the feasibility of reaching a truly comprehensive deal.
