Premier Li Qiang Addresses G20 Summit in Johannesburg

Johannesburg, South Africa – Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Saturday, November 22, 2025, urged the Group of 20 (G20) economies to firmly uphold free trade and build an open world economy. Speaking at the first session of the 20th G20 Summit, which focused on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, Premier Li highlighted the need for solidarity and cooperation in the face of a sluggish global economic recovery. Call for Solidarity and Openness

Premier Li emphasized that the world economy is currently grappling with significant challenges, including a rise in unilateralism and protectionism, alongside escalating trade restrictions and confrontations. He called on G20 members to 'stay committed to solidarity' and 'explore solutions' to bring all parties back to a path of cooperation.

The Chinese Premier stressed the importance of resolving disputes and frictions through consultation based on equality, actively seeking common ground, and addressing each other's reasonable concerns. He underscored that 'solidarity is strength, but division leads nowhere,' echoing a sentiment previously expressed by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 17th G20 Summit.

Advocating for Multilateralism and Institutional Reform

In his address, Li Qiang urged G20 economies to lead in upholding multilateralism, particularly when facing governance difficulties. He called for accelerating the reform of key international institutions, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). The objective of these reforms, he stated, is to enhance the voice of developing countries and establish a fairer and more open international economic and trade order.

Premier Li also noted China's commitment to global development, mentioning an action plan for implementing the G20 Initiative on Supporting Industrialization in Africa and Least Developed Countries.
