Attack on Orlivka Border Crossing
In the early hours of November 22, 2025, Russian forces conducted a drone attack on the Orlivka-Isaccea border crossing, a vital transit point connecting Ukraine and Romania. The assault resulted in significant damage to infrastructure and left at least two civilians injured. Ukrainian authorities confirmed that the international checkpoint has temporarily suspended operations following the strike.
The attack targeted the Donau ferry terminal, located in the Odesa region of Ukraine, near the Romanian town of Isaccea. This crossing is crucial for both passenger and cargo transportation between Ukraine and the European Union.
Infrastructure Damage and Casualties
The drone strike caused extensive damage to the ferry complex infrastructure. According to Ukrainian officials, including Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, and the State Customs Service of Ukraine, administrative buildings sustained damage to their facades, roofs, and windows. Additionally, 11 cargo trucks parked in the area were hit, along with a mobile scanning system truck and a mobile customs inspection vehicle. The two injured civilians are reportedly receiving medical care.
The Ukrainian Air Force had issued warnings about hostile unmanned aerial vehicles approaching the border region. While Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted 89 of the more than 100 drones and a ballistic missile launched by Russia, a number of drones managed to bypass defenses and strike their intended targets across 15 different locations. The drones were reportedly launched from occupied Crimea, as well as from Russian territories such as Bryansk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk.
Regional Response and Broader Context
On the Romanian side of the border, heightened drone activity triggered emergency alerts in the Tulcea district. The Romanian Air Force responded by dispatching two F-16 fighter jets from the 86th Air Base to monitor the airspace. The Romanian Ministry of Defense later confirmed that no Russian drones had entered Romanian territory during the incident and that the deployed aircraft returned without incident.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration, Oleksiy Kuleba, stated that this marks the third attack on the Orlivka checkpoint, emphasizing Russia's 'targeted strike on critical transport routes and civilians.' Previous Russian strikes had also temporarily halted ferry services at Orlivka in October 2023 and October 2022, highlighting a pattern of targeting this strategic crossing.

The article downplays the military context. Nothing is truly 'civilian' in a war zone.

The immediate impact of this strike on trade and civilian movement is definitely negative, yet we must consider that in wartime, all supply lines become potential targets, regardless of their primary civilian function.

Another day, another Russian attack on innocent people. When will this end?

This constant aggression proves Putin's evil intentions. Ukraine needs stronger support!

While Russia's attack on a border crossing is a clear act of aggression, the repeated targeting suggests its strategic importance to both sides, highlighting the difficult balance between civilian life and military objectives in this conflict.

They call it civilian, but these crossings are key for Western military aid. Strategic target.

So Ukraine intercepted 89 drones, yet still blames Russia entirely? Propaganda.

This attack on civilian infrastructure is alarming and causes real suffering, but it also reflects Russia's strategy to cripple Ukraine's ability to resupply. There's a clear humanitarian cost, but also a military rationale behind such actions.
