Former Reform UK Wales Leader Sentenced for Bribery
Nathan Gill, 52, the former leader of Reform UK in Wales and a former Member of the European Parliament (MEP), was sentenced on Friday, November 21, 2025, to ten and a half years in prison. The sentencing, which took place at the Old Bailey in London, followed Gill's admission of guilt to eight counts of bribery related to promoting pro-Russia narratives for financial gain.
Justice Cheema-Grubb, who presided over the case, stated that Gill 'abused a position of significant authority and trust' and 'fundamentally compromised the integrity of a supranational legislative body' through his actions.
Details of the Bribery Scheme
The court heard that Gill accepted at least £40,000 (approximately $52,000-$53,000) in payments between December 6, 2018, and July 18, 2019. These bribes were paid by Oleg Voloshyn, a pro-Russian Ukrainian politician, who tasked Gill with making scripted statements and television appearances. The narratives promoted by Gill were designed to benefit Russian interests concerning Ukraine, including making pro-Russian statements about events in Ukraine in the European Parliament and in opinion pieces for news outlets such as 112 Ukraine.
The investigation into Gill's activities began after he was stopped at Manchester Airport on September 13, 2021, while attempting to travel to Moscow. His mobile phone was seized, revealing WhatsApp messages between Gill and Voloshyn. These messages contained coded references to payments, using terms like 'promised X-mas gifts' and 'postcards'.
Political Background and Reactions
At the time of the offenses, Gill was serving as an MEP, having been elected first for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and later for the Brexit Party. He also briefly led Reform UK in Wales in 2021. Voloshyn, who orchestrated the payments, is believed to have links to Viktor Medvedchuk, a Ukrainian ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Reform UK has condemned Gill's actions, with a spokesperson describing them as 'reprehensible, treasonous and unforgivable'. The party welcomed the sentence, stating, 'We are glad that justice has been served and fully welcome the sentence Nathan Gill has received.' This case marks the first instance in UK history of a politician being convicted of bribery related to foreign influence operations.
Legal Proceedings and Future Implications
Gill pleaded guilty to the eight bribery charges in September 2025. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has initiated proceedings to recover the illegally obtained money from Gill. Commander Dominic Murphy, Head of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, emphasized that the sentencing sends a clear message that 'any efforts by foreign powers to bribe people in the UK in elected and influential positions will not be tolerated.'

Excellent news. A clear message against foreign interference in our politics.

It's good to see foreign influence operations being taken seriously with this sentencing, but one has to wonder how many more politicians are involved in similar schemes that haven't been uncovered yet. This case highlights a systemic vulnerability.

It's important that those who abuse their position for foreign financial gain face severe consequences, as Gill has. Yet, the focus on a single individual shouldn't overshadow the broader issue of how easily foreign actors can attempt to sway political discourse in the UK.

While Nathan Gill's actions were clearly a betrayal of trust and deserve punishment, it's concerning that it took an attempt to travel to Moscow and a phone seizure to uncover this. This suggests a failure in oversight that needs addressing.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. What about all the other hidden foreign influences?

Is this really about justice, or just making an example out of someone specific?
