DMGT Enters Exclusive Talks for Telegraph Acquisition
Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT), owner of the Daily Mail, has reached an agreement to purchase Telegraph Media Group for £500 million. The deal, announced on Saturday, November 22, 2025, sees DMGT enter a period of exclusive talks with Redbird IMI, the current holder of the Telegraph titles, to finalize terms and prepare for regulatory submissions. This development marks a significant step in the protracted sale of the influential British newspaper group.
A Protracted Sale Process
The sale of the Telegraph Media Group, which includes The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph, has been ongoing since June 2023. The titles were put up for sale after being repossessed by Lloyds Banking Group due to outstanding debts of the Barclay family. Redbird IMI, a joint venture between RedBird Capital and Abu Dhabi's International Media Investments (IMI), had previously attempted to acquire the titles. However, this bid was blocked by the UK government amid concerns over foreign state ownership and its potential impact on press freedom. New legislation was subsequently introduced, limiting foreign state ownership in UK newspapers to a maximum of 15%. A separate bid by RedBird Capital Partners collapsed just last week, reportedly due to internal opposition from the Telegraph's newsroom and ongoing regulatory scrutiny.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Future Plans
The proposed acquisition will undergo review by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, in line with public interest and foreign state influence media mergers regimes. The deal is also expected to attract scrutiny from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and Ofcom. DMGT, chaired by Lord Rothermere, has expressed confidence that regulatory processes can be concluded swiftly. Lord Rothermere stated his long-standing admiration for The Daily Telegraph, describing it as 'Britain's largest and best quality broadsheet newspaper' and emphasizing its 'remarkable history' and 'vital role in shaping Britain's national debate over many decades.' DMGT plans to 'invest substantially' in the Telegraph, aiming to accelerate its international expansion, particularly in the United States. The company has also affirmed that the editorial teams of the Daily Mail and the Telegraph would remain separate and editorially independent.
Impact on the UK Media Landscape
Should the acquisition be approved, it would consolidate a powerful right-leaning media group in the United Kingdom, bringing together titles such as the Daily Mail, Metro, The I Paper, and the Telegraph newspapers under one ownership. This move is anticipated to provide 'much-needed certainty and confidence' to the employees of the Telegraph, who have faced a period of considerable uncertainty during the prolonged sale process.

DMGT owning the Telegraph just creates a right-wing media giant. Worrying.

Finally, some certainty for the staff. This deal secures their future.

They say investment, I say influence. This isn't good for independent journalism.

The promise of editorial independence is reassuring for now, and the investment could modernize the Telegraph. Yet, it's hard to ignore the potential for subtle editorial alignment when two major conservative papers are owned by the same entity.

Lord Rothermere knows media. This acquisition makes perfect sense for growth.

Another step towards a media monopoly. Where's the scrutiny on this?
