Strategic Procurement to Bolster Air Defenses
Israel's Ministry of Defense (IMOD) officially announced on November 20, 2025, the signing of a multi-billion dollar contract with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, a state-owned arms manufacturer, for the procurement of additional Iron Dome interceptors. The agreement is designed to significantly expand the serial production of the short-range air defense system and replenish the Israeli military's stockpiles, which have seen intensive use in recent conflicts.
The procurement order was signed by Defense Ministry Director General Amir Baram following comprehensive negotiations between ministry officials and Rafael. Defense Minister Israel Katz hailed the deal as a 'strategic leap' that will 'substantially enhance the protection of Israel's skies.'
US Aid Package Funds Critical Defense Expansion
The substantial investment is financed through a $5.2 billion allocation from an $8.7 billion US aid package that the US Congress approved in April 2024. This broader package is dedicated to enhancing Israel's air defense capabilities, encompassing not only the Iron Dome but also other systems like David's Sling and a high-energy laser currently in its final developmental phase.
As part of this expanded production effort, the Raytheon-Rafael Protection Systems (R2S) joint venture, a collaboration between Rafael and Raytheon (an RTX business), was awarded a $1.25 billion contract to supply Israel with Tamir surface-to-air missiles. This specific contract includes missiles, missile kits, and test equipment.
New US Production Facility Opens in Arkansas
Coinciding with the contract announcement, a new production facility for Iron Dome interceptors officially opened in East Camden, Arkansas. This facility, established through a $33 million capital investment, is the first 'all-up-round' production site in the US to manufacture both Tamir missiles for the Iron Dome Weapon System and its US variant, SkyHunter.
Jonathan Casey, CEO of R2S, stated that this marks 'the first production contract for the R2S joint venture and a major milestone for both Raytheon and Rafael.' The new site aims to accelerate the serial production of interceptors, with operations scheduled to commence in 2025.
Iron Dome's Proven Effectiveness
The Iron Dome system, jointly developed by Israel and the United States, has been operational since 2011 and has demonstrated exceptional performance in combat. It is designed to intercept short- and medium-range rockets, missiles, and drones, boasting an interception success rate exceeding 95%. The system has intercepted thousands of projectiles fired at Israel from various fronts, underscoring its critical role in the nation's multi-tiered air defense architecture.

Investing in advanced air defense is understandable given the security challenges faced by Israel, however, focusing solely on military solutions can overshadow the critical need for diplomatic and political resolutions.

Why are we funding other countries' defense instead of our own pressing issues?
