IDF Kills Six, Captures Five Hamas Operatives Emerging from Rafah Tunnels

IDF Neutralizes Hamas Cell in Eastern Rafah

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Friday, November 21, 2025, that its forces killed six Hamas operatives and captured five others who emerged from underground tunnels in eastern Rafah, Gaza. The incident involved a total of 15 Hamas operatives who surfaced from two distinct tunnel openings in an area of southern Gaza currently under Israeli control, near the 'Yellow Line' – a dividing corridor between Israel-controlled territory and other parts of Gaza.

According to the IDF, the operatives posed an 'immediate threat' to troops deployed in the area. The Israeli Air Force (IAF), acting on intelligence provided by ground forces, conducted strikes that resulted in the deaths of six operatives. Simultaneously, soldiers from the Nahal Brigade successfully apprehended five operatives who surrendered. These captured individuals have since been transferred to Israel for interrogation by the Shin Bet security agency.

Ongoing Operations Against Hamas Tunnel Network

The engagement is part of a concentrated effort by the IDF to dismantle Hamas's extensive underground infrastructure in Rafah. The military has been actively working to 'destroy the remaining underground routes in the area and eliminate the terrorists residing in them,' according to official statements.

Estimates suggest that dozens, possibly around 200 Hamas operatives, remain holed up within the tunnel systems in the Rafah area. These tunnels are described as sprawling and complex, with some stretching for miles and descending up to 25 meters deep. They reportedly contain command centers, weapons storage facilities, and have been used for various operational purposes, including holding hostages.

Context Amidst Ceasefire and International Pressure

This latest confrontation occurs despite an October ceasefire agreement. The IDF has indicated that its operations in Rafah are crucial for eliminating the last vestiges of Hamas's tunnel network.

Reports indicate that the United States has pressured Israel to allow safe passage for Hamas operatives trapped in these tunnels back to Hamas-held areas of Gaza. However, Israel has reportedly rejected these calls, insisting that the remaining fighters must be 'eliminated,' not evacuated.

Following the incident, the IDF stated that it is continuing to scan the area, both from the air and on the ground, to locate the remaining four operatives who emerged from the tunnels and are currently at large.

Capturing and eliminating operatives from tunnels addresses an immediate threat, however, the article also points to hundreds still remaining, suggesting this is a continuous, difficult struggle with no easy end.

Refusing safe passage only guarantees more bloodshed. A tragic cycle.

What about the humanitarian impact? This escalates tensions further.

More military action, less diplomacy. This isn't peace, it's escalation.

It's positive that some operatives were captured for intelligence, but the rejection of US calls for safe passage might prolong the conflict rather than end it definitively.

The IDF's effectiveness in this specific operation is clear, yet the article highlights the deep-seated nature of the conflict and the difficulty in achieving lasting peace through military means alone.
