Introduction to TARANIS 2025
The French military is currently engaged in its annual TARANIS 2025 air force drill, a comprehensive exercise designed to simulate high-intensity modern warfare scenarios. Running from November 10 to November 27, 2025, the drill aims to prepare French air forces for evolving threats and enhance their operational readiness and strategic agility.
Simulating Modern Warfare Scenarios
The TARANIS 2025 exercise incorporates a wide array of realistic combat simulations, reflecting the complexities of contemporary conflicts. Key scenarios include:
- Anti-drone operations, utilizing specialized Fennec helicopters
- Landings on improvised gravel runways, a critical skill for operations in austere environments
- Tactical parachuting and the exfiltration of nationals
- Securing sensitive areas
- The deployment of transport aircraft, such as the A400M, for complex airlift operations
Key Participants and Locations
The drill involves over 250 French and Greek aviators and military personnel, fostering interoperability with international partners. Operations are spread across several strategic locations in France, including Air Base 701 in Salon-de-Provence, Air Base 115 in Orange, and the Orléans–Bricy Air Base. Euronews was granted exclusive access to the French military during the exercise at Orléans–Bricy Air Base on November 20, 2025, observing a Fennec helicopter lift-off and an A400M's landing on a newly constructed gravel runway.
Enhancing Advanced Capabilities
A significant focus of TARANIS 2025 is the testing and enhancement of advanced military capabilities. This includes the use of Fennec helicopters, with one variant specifically configured for anti-drone missions, mirroring systems recently deployed in Denmark, and another equipped with a heavier weapon system to engage larger drones. The exercise underscores France's commitment to maintaining a high level of preparedness and improving the resilience of its forces in a multi-domain context, contributing to the training of future executives within the Air and Space Force.

Why are we always preparing for conflict? It feels like warmongering.

While military preparedness is important for national defense, these extensive drills consume significant resources that could also be directed towards addressing domestic challenges or humanitarian aid.

It's reassuring to see efforts to counter modern threats like drones and cyber-attacks, but I worry that focusing so heavily on high-intensity conflict might overshadow the need for robust diplomatic solutions to international disputes.

This only escalates tensions. We need de-escalation, not drills.

Improving advanced capabilities and training future executives is commendable for a strong defense. Still, it's worth considering the long-term economic burden of maintaining such an advanced military apparatus on the national budget.
