Strategic Investment Boosts Brazilian Automotive Sector
Renault Group and Geely Holding Group have announced a significant investment of R$3.8 billion (approximately $704 million USD) aimed at upgrading Renault's industrial complex in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná, Brazil. This strategic move is set to transform the facility into a hub for the production of new electrified models, marking a pivotal step in the companies' joint efforts to advance sustainable mobility in the region.
The investment follows Geely's acquisition of a 26.4% stake in Renault do Brasil, forming the new entity 'Renault Geely do Brasil.' Renault Group will maintain its position as the majority shareholder.
Production Timeline and Model Plans
The substantial capital injection will primarily support the implementation of Geely's new zero and low-emission technology (GEA) platform. This platform will serve as the foundation for two new Geely models, with their production scheduled to commence in the second half of 2026 at the upgraded Paraná plant.
In addition to the new Geely vehicles, the investment plan includes:
- A refreshed version of an existing Renault model, slated for launch in the second half of 2026.
- The development and production of a new electrified platform for Renault, which will underpin a new model set to enter production in 2027.
The Ayrton Senna industrial complex, which currently produces models such as the Kwid and Kardian, will integrate the assembly of these new Geely vehicles, significantly increasing its utilization rates and enhancing competitiveness.
Synergies and Market Impact
This collaboration leverages the strengths of both automotive giants. Geely gains immediate access to Renault's established manufacturing facilities and extensive distribution network across Brazil, accelerating its expansion in Latin America's largest automotive market. Conversely, Renault benefits from Geely's advanced new energy vehicle (NEV) technology, enabling it to broaden its portfolio of zero and low-emission vehicles for the Brazilian consumer.
The partnership builds upon existing global collaborations between Renault and Geely, which include joint ventures in Korea and the co-ownership of Horse Powertrain, a company focused on developing hybrid and internal combustion engines. This latest investment in Brazil underscores a shared commitment to the long-term future of the country's automotive sector and its transition towards electric mobility.

While this R$3.8 billion investment will undoubtedly create jobs and boost the economy, I worry about the high cost of these new EVs. They might remain out of reach for most Brazilian consumers.

The environmental impact of battery production is often overlooked. Is this truly 'green'?

It's great to see advanced electrified vehicle technology coming to Brazil through this partnership. However, we need significant government investment in public charging networks to support this shift effectively.
