Principal and Staff Member Fatally Shot at Inxiweni Primary School in Tembisa

Tragic Incident Unfolds at Tembisa School

A shocking incident unfolded on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at Inxiweni Primary School in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, South Africa, where the school's 58-year-old principal and a 55-year-old administrative staff member were fatally shot. The double murder occurred inside the school's administration block around 5 PM, as the two women and other colleagues were reportedly preparing for a meeting scheduled for later in the week.

According to preliminary reports, colleagues in a nearby office heard gunshots and, fearing for their safety, hid. Upon emerging, they discovered the principal and the administrator lying in the passage of the admin block. Emergency services were promptly called to the scene, but both victims were declared dead upon arrival.

Official Response and Condemnation

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) expressed deep shock and sadness over the tragic event. GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed the details of the shooting.

In response to the killings, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the school on Tuesday evening to assess the scene and offer condolences to the grieving families. MEC Chiloane condemned the attack, calling it 'a senseless and brutal act committed within a school, a place meant to be a sanctuary for teaching and learning'.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the murders. As of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the shooting remains unknown.

Community Impact and Support Measures

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Tembisa community, sparking fear and anger. The tragedy also comes amidst national efforts in South Africa to raise awareness about gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

To support the affected school community, the GDE has announced that psychosocial support teams from the Ekurhuleni North District will be deployed to Inxiweni Primary School starting Wednesday. These teams will provide trauma counseling to learners and staff. Additionally, employee wellness officials will be on-site to assist affected workers.

The department has urged anyone with information related to the shooting to assist the police in their ongoing investigation.

The focus on psychosocial support is crucial for healing, yet the lack of immediate arrests leaves a gaping hole in the pursuit of justice for these senseless murders.

While the immediate support for the school community is commendable, this tragic event underscores a much larger societal failure regarding safety in public spaces.
