The Duke of Edinburgh's visit to Nigeria is part of a week-long series of engagements in Lagos, scheduled from November 17 to 23, 2025, aimed at championing the expansion of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award across the globe.
Emphasis on Youth Empowerment and Economic Reforms
During the meeting, President Tinubu underscored that the ongoing reforms are meticulously designed to strengthen Nigeria's economy and institutions, ultimately securing a prosperous future for Nigerian youths. He stated that these reforms would 'empower them with skills that will make them globally competitive'.
The President highlighted the central role of young people in the nation's economic repositioning, asserting that their ownership of these key reforms is crucial for Nigeria's future. 'Our reforms are about growth and prosperity for the nation. It takes into full consideration demography and skills development. We are emulating best practices in exploring opportunities in several areas of skills development,' President Tinubu remarked.
Key Initiatives for Youth Development
President Tinubu outlined several initiatives aimed at fostering youth development and inclusion:
- Special Education Loan Fund: This fund is designed to ensure that no university student is left behind due to financial constraints, enabling them to complete their education.
- Fibre Optics and Infrastructure Projects: A nationwide rollout of fibre optics and other infrastructural developments are underway to promote access and optimize the inclusion of young people in the digital economy.
- Addressing Security Challenges: The government is actively tackling security and crime, with notable results, to create a more stable environment for growth and development.
The President also noted Nigeria's upcoming participation in the G-20 meetings, where youth issues are expected to be a central theme.
Prince Edward Commends Nigeria's Efforts
Prince Edward, in his capacity as Chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation, commended President Tinubu's reform agenda, acknowledging that it has garnered positive global attention.
His visit to Nigeria is primarily to oversee events related to the International Award, which will see nearly 200 young people from over 50 countries converge in Lagos. Additionally, 320 Nigerian youths are slated to be honored at ceremonies hosted in partnership with the Lagos State Government. The Duke's engagements include an intensive three-day youth leadership program and the organization's triennial forum, both focused on expanding access to the Award globally.
The meeting was attended by key officials including the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Sir Richard Montgomery, and Nigeria's Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun. Minister Edun highlighted Nigeria's youthful median age of 17 years as a driving factor behind many of the government's policy decisions, emphasizing that reforms are structured to expand opportunities, skills development, and growth for young people.
