Ukraine Intelligence Reports Russia Developing 400-Kilometer Range Guided Bomb

Russia's Evolving Glide Bomb Program

The Russian Federation is reportedly developing a new guided aerial bomb capable of striking targets up to 400 kilometers away, according to Ukraine's Defense Intelligence. Major General Vadym Skibitskyi, Deputy Head of Ukraine's Defense Intelligence (GUR), revealed this information in an interview with Reuters. This new munition represents a significant evolution in Russia's glide bomb program, which has seen considerable expansion since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Skibitskyi stated that Russia is 'working on modifications that would allow these bombs to reach distances of up to 400 km,' enabling Moscow to 'strike even more Ukrainian cities without using missiles.'

Current Production and Usage

Ukrainian intelligence indicates that Russia has already commenced mass production of an upgraded version of these glide bombs, which boasts a range of up to 200 kilometers. Approximately 500 of these longer-range bombs are expected to be produced by the end of 2025. Overall, Ukraine's Defense Intelligence estimates that Russia plans to manufacture up to 120,000 glide bombs in 2025, a figure that includes both newly built munitions and standard bombs converted into guided weapons.

Russian forces are reportedly deploying these weapons at a high rate, launching between 200 and 250 glide bombs on Ukraine daily. This marks a notable increase from an average of 170 per day in October 2025.

Technical Specifications and Impact

The existing guided aerial bombs, initially assessed with a range of about 90 kilometers, have allowed Russian aircraft to operate behind the front lines while striking Ukrainian targets. The newer 200-kilometer range versions, such as the UMPB-5R glide bomb, are equipped with a jet engine and an updated Universal Planning and Correction Module (UMPK) for improved aerodynamics. Analysis of debris from the UMPB-5R has indicated the presence of a Chinese-origin SW800Pro-Y turbojet engine, manufactured by Swiwin.

These bombs are considered a cost-effective alternative to missiles, carrying several hundred kilograms of explosives. They are primarily launched from Su-34 fighter-bombers. The first recorded use of the 200-kilometer range weapons occurred in late October 2025. Their expanding reach has been demonstrated through strikes on cities and towns in the Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Poltava, and Odesa regions.

Strategic Implications

The development and mass production of these long-range guided bombs allow Russia to target a wider array of Ukrainian cities without exposing its aircraft to Ukrainian air defense systems. This capability poses a significant threat, as these munitions are cheaper and more readily available than traditional missiles, enabling a sustained campaign of strikes deep within Ukrainian territory.

They're using cost-effective solutions. That's just efficient warfare, not a new threat.

More Western weapons won't change the outcome. Russia will always find a way.

The threat of wider strikes on Ukrainian cities is undeniable given the increased range, but the article mentions these bombs are less precise than missiles and are primarily launched from older aircraft. This suggests they are a blunt instrument, effective for saturation but perhaps less so for critical infrastructure targeting.

While the development of a 400km bomb is concerning, the article notes the 200km version is currently in mass production, suggesting the longer-range one is still some time away from widespread deployment. It's a future threat, but immediate focus should be on countering what's already active.

Russia's move to mass-produce these cheaper glide bombs is a clear strategic adaptation to conserve more expensive missiles, yet it also highlights their reliance on quantity over precision for deeper strikes. This shift could lead to more indiscriminate damage, potentially escalating international pressure.

Just confirms Russia's strategy: cheap, devastating attacks to overwhelm defenses.

Ukraine's intel always paints the worst picture. Probably an exaggeration for aid.

Unbelievable cruelty. These glide bombs are designed to terrorize civilians from afar.

400km range? Sounds like pure propaganda to drum up fear and donations.

It's alarming to hear about the potential for such long-range weapons, and Ukraine's intelligence often proves reliable. However, the exact timeline for the 400km bomb's operational readiness isn't specified, leaving room for skepticism about its immediate impact versus the current 200km versions.

Russia is just innovating, like any military would. It's a smart tactical move.
