Medical Student Leaders Convene in National Harbor
The American Medical Association's (AMA) Medical Student Section (MSS) successfully held its 2025 Interim Meeting from November 13-14, 2025, at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The gathering brought together over 400 medical students to engage in policy discussions, leadership elections, and educational programming.
Key Resolutions Addressed
During the two-day meeting, the MSS Assembly deliberated on 22 items of business, encompassing a diverse range of topics pertinent to medical education and healthcare. Discussions and reports focused on critical issues such as environmental justice, the intricacies of trainee selection based on ERAS updates, and various aspects of governance. Resolutions adopted by the AMA House of Delegates become official AMA policy, guiding the organization's advocacy efforts.
New Leadership Elected for 2026-2027 Term
A significant component of the Interim Meeting was the election of new leadership for the MSS. Harsha Duddila Sripadrao was elected as the MSS Governing Council chair-elect for the 2026-2027 term. Additionally, Kylie Ruprecht was chosen to serve as the student representative to the Board of Trustees for the same term. These elections took place on November 14, 2025. The meeting also marked the completion of Anand Singh, MD's tenure as immediate past chair of the MSS.
Educational Programs and Poster Showcase
Beyond policy and elections, the meeting featured a robust schedule of educational programs designed to enhance students' understanding of the medical landscape. Four distinct programs were hosted: 'How Federal Agencies Shape Medical Practice and Education,' 'Op-Ed as an Advocacy Tool for Student Doctors,' 'Unseen and Underserved—Centering Disability in Medical Training and Care,' and 'Putting “ME” in OEM—The Physician's Role in Safeguarding Occupational Health.' In conjunction with the Interim Meeting, an AMA Poster Showcase was held on November 14, providing medical students, residents, and international medical graduates (IMGs) an opportunity to present their research abstracts.

Another AMA meeting, more talk, less action. What actually changes?

It's positive that medical students are engaging in policy discussions, which is crucial for future healthcare. However, the true impact of these resolutions on the broader medical community and patient care often remains to be seen.

Just a glorified networking event for a select few. Real issues ignored.

Empowering students to lead and shape healthcare. Love it!

The educational programs offered seem valuable for expanding students' perspectives beyond clinical practice. Yet, it's easy for these discussions to remain theoretical without concrete mechanisms for implementation into daily medical training or practice.

Great platform for young medical professionals. So much learning and networking!
