Ukrainian Forces Target Ryazan Oil Refinery
Ukrainian forces have claimed responsibility for a drone attack on a Russian oil refinery in the Ryazan region, located approximately 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of Moscow, on Saturday, November 15, 2025. The Ukrainian army announced on social media that it had struck the facility.
The attack comes a day after deadly Russian strikes on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, which resulted in seven fatalities.
Strategic Justification for the Strike
The Ukrainian military stated that the strike on the Ryazan refinery was 'part of efforts to reduce the enemy's ability to launch missile and bomb strikes.' Ukraine has consistently conducted missile and drone attacks within Russian territory since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
Russian Response and Damage Assessment
Pavel Malkov, the governor of the Ryazan region, reported that Russian air defenses successfully shot down 25 Ukrainian drones over the area during the night. He further stated on Telegram that 'falling debris caused a fire on the premises of one enterprise,' but confirmed that there were 'no casualties.'
The targeted facility, the Ryazan oil refinery, is identified as Russia's fourth-largest, with a processing capacity of 262,000 barrels of oil per day. The attack reportedly led to a partial halt in its production.
Escalating Tensions Following Kyiv Attacks
The drone strike on the Ryazan refinery occurred shortly after Russia launched a series of attacks on residential areas in Kyiv. These Russian assaults on November 14, 2025, tragically killed seven people, including an elderly woman who succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, and a couple in their 70s. Additionally, Russian attacks on Saturday in southern Ukrainian regions resulted in four more deaths.

Excellent work by Ukraine. Hit them where it hurts most.

More attacks on Russian soil just prolongs this war.

It's understandable that Ukraine would target Russian assets after recent civilian deaths, but the long-term impact of these strikes on global energy markets and the potential for a broader conflict is worrying. This war needs a diplomatic solution, not more tit-for-tat.

The targeting of Ryazan refinery is a clear message from Ukraine after the Kyiv attacks, demonstrating their reach. However, without significant, sustained damage, these isolated strikes might only serve to harden Russian resolve rather than truly cripple their war efforts.

Targeting oil refineries is a dangerous game. It will backfire.

Tit-for-tat. Russia started it, Ukraine finishes it.

This only escalates the conflict. Civilian infrastructure is off-limits.

Another step closer to wider conflict. Very concerning.

Justice for Kyiv. They deserve every strike back.
