Thabo Mbeki Urges Inclusive National Dialogue to Address South Africa's Multifaceted Crisis

Mbeki's Call for National Unity and Action

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki has consistently advocated for an inclusive national dialogue to address what he describes as a 'debilitating general crisis' affecting the nation's politics, economy, and society. His initial call was made on April 30, 2024, during his 'Observations to mark the 30th anniversary of South Africa's democracy' address at Freedom Park in Tshwane. Mbeki reiterated this urgent need at the South African Communist Party (SACP) conference on December 15, 2024, and most recently at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha on November 1, 2025, during the launch of the National Dialogue in the Eastern Cape Higher Education sector.

Mbeki has highlighted a range of critical issues plaguing South Africa, including widespread corruption, the destruction of vital infrastructure, persistent economic stagnation, alarmingly high rates of unemployment and poverty, pervasive lawlessness, and a significant erosion of civic trust. He attributed the challenges of the past 15 years to what he termed an 'organised counter-revolution', emphasizing the urgent need for collective intervention to steer the country towards stability and progress.

Structure and Support for the Dialogue

The proposed national dialogue is envisioned as a broad and inclusive platform, designed to gather input from all sectors of South African society. Mbeki has stressed the importance of participation from civil society organizations, politicians, businesses, labor unions, and other key stakeholders. He stated that the dialogue would bring together 'all sections of society, from business, traditional healers, NGOs, and others', underscoring a commitment to comprehensive representation.

The initiative has garnered significant support, notably from current President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has publicly endorsed the idea. The dialogue is being facilitated by the National Foundations Dialogue Initiative (NFDI), an entity established in 2016 by various respected foundations. A temporary Preparatory Task Team (PTT), comprising over 50 civil society groups, the NEDLAC secretariat, and four officials from the Presidency, is organizing the logistics. A National Convention, marking the formal commencement of the dialogue, is scheduled to take place from August 15-17, 2025, at NASREC.

Challenges and Criticisms

Despite the broad support, the national dialogue has faced criticism. The Democratic Alliance (DA), a prominent opposition party, withdrew its participation, with its leader John Steenhuisen and federal chair Helen Zille reportedly dismissing the initiative as an 'ANC election campaign in disguise' or a 'sham'. In response, Mbeki publicly criticized the DA's decision in an 11-page open letter, calling their withdrawal 'misplaced and very strange indeed' and arguing that the dialogue is a citizen-led process, not a political tool.

Mbeki has also issued a cautionary note regarding the effectiveness of the dialogue itself. He warned that the process, estimated to cost R700-million, risks being 'meaningless' without capable and honest leadership committed to implementing its outcomes. He emphasized that the success of the dialogue hinges on genuine public input and the integrity of those tasked with translating discussions into actionable solutions for South Africa's future.

It's good to see Mbeki pushing for inclusivity across society. However, the DA's worries about this becoming a political tool rather than a genuine solution cannot be entirely dismissed.

While the idea of a national dialogue is crucial for addressing our deep-seated issues, the historical lack of implementation from similar initiatives raises serious concerns about its ultimate effectiveness.

Recognizing the need for all sectors to participate is vital for comprehensive solutions. Still, the risk of powerful political factions hijacking the process, as the DA fears, remains a significant hurdle to its credibility.

Mbeki correctly identifies the 'debilitating crisis' facing SA, and dialogue is a logical first step. Yet, his own caution about 'meaningless' outcomes without honest leadership highlights the immense challenges ahead.
