Mexico Confirms On-Time Completion of 2026 World Cup Infrastructure Projects

Mexico Ready for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Mexico City, Mexico – President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday, November 10, 2025, that all federal infrastructure projects designated for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico are on track for timely completion ahead of the tournament's commencement in June. The declaration underscores Mexico's commitment to hosting a successful segment of the global football event.

Key Infrastructure Developments

Among the critical federal projects highlighted by President Sheinbaum are significant upgrades to the nation's air travel infrastructure. These include the extensive renovation of the two terminals at Mexico City International Airport. Additionally, a new train line is being constructed to connect Mexico City with the Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Santa Lucía, located approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) away. The federal government is investing 9 billion pesos ($489 million) specifically into the renovation of the Mexico City airport. While details for specific federal projects in Monterrey and Guadalajara are expected to be released in the coming weeks, President Sheinbaum confirmed that these host cities will also see necessary developments.

Mexico's Role in the Global Tournament

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be a historic event, jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The tournament is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Mexico is set to host 13 matches across its three designated host cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Of these, five matches will take place in the capital, with the remaining eight games split between Guadalajara and Monterrey.

The iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City will make history by hosting the opening match on June 11, 2026, becoming the first venue worldwide to stage three World Cup opening games. Renovations at Estadio Azteca are currently underway, funded by a private company. Other Mexican stadiums slated to host matches include Estadio Akron in Guadalajara and Estadio BBVA in Monterrey.

Anticipated Economic Impact and Visitor Influx

President Sheinbaum emphasized the significant economic and cultural impact the World Cup is expected to bring. Mexico anticipates an additional 5.5 million visitors across its three host cities during the tournament. She stated, 'This is not only a time to see the best soccer but also a time to share with the world who we are, what Mexico is — not only a country of immense cultural richness but also a country experiencing a historic moment.' Mexico holds the distinction of being the first country to host or co-host the men's World Cup three times, having previously done so in 1970 and 1986.

While the upgrades to airports and the new train line are welcome, especially for such a major event, there needs to be a clear plan for their ongoing maintenance and capacity after the tournament ends. We've seen similar projects fall into disrepair.

It's great to see investment in infrastructure for the World Cup, which will bring global attention. However, I hope these improvements also directly benefit daily commuters long-term, not just tourists.

The economic boost from 5.5 million visitors sounds promising for businesses. Yet, I'm concerned about how local communities outside the main tourist zones will truly benefit, and if prices will become unaffordable for residents.
