China's 15th National Games Officially Opens, Emphasizing Greater Bay Area Unity

Historic Opening Ceremony in Guangzhou

The 15th National Games of the People's Republic of China officially opens today, Sunday, November 9, 2025, with a grand opening ceremony held in Guangzhou. This edition marks a significant milestone as it is the first time the country's highest-level and largest multi-sport event is jointly hosted by Guangdong province and the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao. The Games, which run until November 21, 2025, are set to showcase unity and foster shared development across the Greater Bay Area.

A Symbol of Regional Integration and 'One Country, Two Systems'

The co-hosting arrangement underscores enhanced connectivity and closer ties among the three regions, demonstrating fresh vitality under the 'one country, two systems' principle. Officials have emphasized the event's role in promoting collaboration and providing a platform for Hong Kong and Macao to further align with national development. The Games will feature 34 competitive sports and 23 mass participation events, encouraging public involvement and promoting sports for all.

Specific events allocated to the co-hosts include:

  • Hong Kong will stage eight competitive events, such as basketball (Men's U22), track cycling, fencing, golf, handball (Men), rugby sevens, triathlon, and beach volleyball, along with bowling as a mass participation event.
  • Macao is set to host competitive events including table tennis, women's volleyball (adult group), 3-on-3 basketball, U18 men's basketball, and karate in the mass events category.
  • The majority of events will take place in Guangdong.

Innovative Cross-Border Events and Technological Showcase

A highlight of the 15th National Games is the inclusion of cross-border events, such as the athletics marathon and road cycling, which are designed to span across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. The road cycling event, notably, will utilize the iconic Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as part of its course, symbolizing the integrated development of the region. This marks the first time such cross-boundary races have been held in the Games' history.

Beyond athletic prowess, the Games will also serve as a showcase for cutting-edge technologies. Artificial intelligence (AI), big data, 5G communications, and cloud computing are being integrated into various aspects, from smart venue management to enhancing the viewing experience. Digital twin systems for venues, AI algorithms for crowd risk prediction, and autonomous vehicles are among the technological innovations being deployed.

Mascots and Medals Reflect Unity

The official mascots, Xiyangyang and Lerongrong, based on the Chinese white dolphin, embody themes of joy, harmony, and unity. The recently unveiled medals, named 'Leaping in Unity' (同心跃), further reinforce this message, with their design integrating elements of the Greater Bay Area's dynamic development and Chinese culture. The medal clasp itself is shaped like the 'knot of unity' from the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, symbolizing solidarity among the three host regions.

The Games are expected to draw elite athletes from various provinces, municipalities, and special administrative regions across China, all vying for top honors. The closing ceremony is scheduled to take place in Shenzhen on November 21, 2025.

The use of advanced technology and the focus on the Greater Bay Area are forward-looking aspects of these Games. However, critics will undoubtedly question if the 'unity' message truly resonates with everyone, particularly given recent history in the SARs.

All this talk of unity feels forced. What about the local identities?

A 'showcase' of tech and control, not genuine athletic spirit. Very transparent.

Just another political spectacle to control Hong Kong and Macao. Don't be fooled.

Promoting sports and regional collaboration is generally a positive thing for development. Still, it's worth considering if this integration is truly voluntary for all parties, or if it carries underlying pressures.

Massive spending on a sports event while real issues persist. Misplaced priorities.
