Nigerian Army Chief Vows Intensified Anti-Terror Operations in North

New Army Chief Pledges Decisive Action

Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Nigeria's recently appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has declared a resolute commitment to intensifying military operations against terrorist groups operating in the northern parts of the country. During his inaugural operational visit to Borno State on November 7, 2025, a region significantly impacted by insurgency, General Shaibu emphatically stated that 'failure is not an option' in the fight against terrorism.

General Shaibu's appointment as COAS was made by President Bola Tinubu on October 24, 2025, as part of a broader shake-up in the nation's security architecture. He succeeded Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede.

Renewed Focus on Counter-Terrorism

Addressing troops in Borno, Lieutenant General Shaibu outlined a strategy centered on renewed energy, clear focus, and absolute dedication. He assured the soldiers of improved logistics, welfare, and combat support, aiming to bolster morale and operational effectiveness. The primary targets of these intensified operations are the entrenched terrorist organizations, Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which have continued to pose significant security challenges in the region.

General Shaibu stated, 'The Nigerian Army under my command will leave no stone unturned. We will pursue this fight with renewed energy, clear focus and absolute dedication to end this menace once and for all.'

Context of the Campaign

The directive for reinvigorated counterterrorism efforts comes directly from President Bola Tinubu. Despite previous gains by the Nigerian military, Boko Haram and ISWAP have escalated attacks on military bases and civilians in Borno State throughout the current year. The new push also follows recent international attention, including a warning from US President Donald Trump regarding alleged violence against Christians in Nigeria, leading to the designation of Nigeria as a 'country of particular concern' for religious freedom.

Lieutenant General Shaibu's Background

Born on December 18, 1971, in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, Lieutenant General Shaibu is a distinguished officer with extensive experience in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations. Prior to his elevation, he served as the Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), leading critical operations in the Northeast. His career is marked by a blend of academic intellect and combat-tested experience, positioning him as a key figure in Nigeria's ongoing battle against insurgency.

While General Shaibu's experience is a definite asset for the military, focusing solely on kinetic operations overlooks the socio-economic factors that fuel insurgency. A comprehensive approach is needed for true success.

More military operations won't fix the underlying problems. It's a cycle.

It's good that the government is addressing the security situation with new leadership, but the international community's warnings highlight a need for transparency and accountability beyond just military action. Trust is paramount.

Empty promises and political posturing. The people are tired.

It's encouraging to hear the new COAS's commitment to intensified operations and troop welfare. However, past declarations haven't always led to lasting peace, so a broader strategy is essential.
