Economic Outlook: A Trillion-Dollar Projection
Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, that China's economy is projected to exceed 170 trillion yuan, equivalent to approximately US$23.8 trillion to US$23.9 trillion, by the year 2030. The announcement was made during the opening ceremony of the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai. This ambitious projection implies an average annual growth rate of around 4% to 4.2% through the end of the decade, aligning with the country's current five-year economic plan. China's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to surpass 140 trillion yuan in the current year, setting the stage for this continued expansion.
Global Market Opportunities and Trade System Reforms
Premier Li Qiang highlighted that China's projected economic growth would generate substantial market opportunities for the global economy, positioning China as an attractive destination for international businesses. He underscored Beijing's commitment to fostering an open and inclusive development environment.
During his address, Li also advocated for significant reforms to the international trading system. He called for the establishment of trade rules that are 'fairer and more transparent,' particularly benefiting developing nations. The Premier criticized existing tariffs and protectionist measures, stating they 'severely undermine international economic and trade rules' and 'disrupt the normal operations of companies in many countries.' While not directly naming any country, these comments were widely interpreted as a response to ongoing global trade tensions.
Commitment to Openness and Domestic Demand
In line with his call for global trade reforms, Premier Li pledged that China would continue to expand its domestic markets and increase imports. He emphasized the nation's strategy to promote 'high-level opening-up' to the outside world and focus on 'expanding domestic demand, especially on boosting consumption,' to fully unleash the potential of its vast market of over 1.4 billion people. The China International Import Expo itself, launched in 2018 under President Xi Jinping, serves as a key platform to demonstrate China's commitment to free trade and counter criticisms regarding its trade surplus.

This continued dominance is concerning for smaller economies. It's not a level playing field.

It's encouraging to hear China commit to high-level opening-up and boosting consumption, which could benefit global trade. However, the historical gap between rhetoric and reality on market access for foreign companies is a valid concern that needs to be overcome.

Fairer trade? Coming from a country with a massive trade surplus? Hypocrisy.

Their push for open markets is exactly what's needed. More trade, less tariffs!

Premier Li's call for global trade reforms addresses legitimate concerns about protectionism. However, for these reforms to be truly effective, China will also need to demonstrate greater transparency and adherence to international intellectual property norms.

Finally, someone calling for fairer trade rules. Protectionism hurts everyone.
