Deutsche Bahn has announced a significant step towards sustainable infrastructure with its first order of 'green' steel rails. The state-owned railway company, through its infrastructure division DB InfraGO, has signed a contract with Saarstahl Rail for the supply of approximately 1,000 tonnes of low-carbon steel. This quantity is sufficient for about 22 kilometers of track and will be installed in the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland. The announcement was made on November 5, 2025.
Pioneering Sustainable Steel Production
The 'green' steel for this pilot project is produced at Saarstahl Ascoval in France. The manufacturing process utilizes electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, which melts scrap metal and used rails to create new steel. This method stands in contrast to traditional blast furnace processes that rely on iron ore and coal. The EAF technology significantly reduces CO2-equivalent emissions by up to 70% compared to conventional steelmaking. For the 1,000 tonnes supplied to Deutsche Bahn, this translates to an estimated reduction of around 1,800 tonnes of CO2e.
Strategic Importance for Climate Goals
This initiative is a crucial component of Deutsche Bahn's broader environmental strategy, which aims for the company to become climate-neutral by 2040. Philipp Nagl, CEO of DB InfraGO AG, emphasized the project's role, stating, 'With the use of emissions-reduced steel, we are making an important contribution to making our construction materials and procurement processes in railway infrastructure even more sustainable.' He added that the collaboration with Saarstahl Rail demonstrates how 'climate-friendly construction and domestic value creation can go hand in hand.' Jonathan Weber, Member of the Executive Board for Transformation at Saarstahl and responsible for Saarstahl Rail, highlighted the broader impact, calling it 'a strong signal for sustainable construction' and a model for the use of emissions-reduced materials in other industries.
Broader Context of Green Rail Initiatives
The railway sector is already recognized as one of the most climate-friendly modes of transport. Deutsche Bahn's commitment to green steel further enhances this advantage, aligning with its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain to net zero. The company's ecological transformation focuses on five key areas:
- Climate resilience
- Climate protection
- Resource conservation
- Environmental protection
- Noise reduction

Finally, a real commitment to reducing emissions in heavy industry. Well done!

It's good to see DB investing in greener materials, even if the initial scale is small. The challenge will be scaling this up significantly without huge cost implications.

The use of EAF technology for steel production is a proven way to cut emissions. Yet, the article highlights 'domestic value creation' while the steel is produced in France, which feels a bit misleading.

This pilot project is a commendable step towards climate-neutral infrastructure. However, relying on foreign production for 'green' materials raises questions about supply chain resilience and local job creation.
