Pskov Court Delivers Verdict
Lev Shlosberg, a prominent Russian opposition politician and senior member of the Yabloko party, was sentenced on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, to 420 hours of community service by a court in Pskov, Russia. The sentencing stems from charges of violating Russia's stringent 'foreign agent' law. Prosecutors had initially sought 440 hours of community service for the politician.
The court found Shlosberg guilty of failing to include the mandatory 'foreign agent' label on five videos posted on his personal social media page. Shlosberg has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and his legal team has indicated their intention to appeal the ruling. The Yabloko party stated that this case marks Russia's first criminal 'foreign agent' prosecution initiated by the police, rather than the usual regulatory body.
The 'Foreign Agent' Law and Its Implications
Shlosberg was officially designated a 'foreign agent' by Russia's Justice Ministry in June 2023. Russia's 'foreign agent' legislation mandates that any individual or organization receiving support from outside Russia or deemed to be under foreign influence must register as a 'foreign agent'. Furthermore, all public communications, including social media posts, must carry a disclaimer indicating this status.
The term 'foreign agent' carries significant negative connotations in Russia, often equated with 'spy' or 'traitor'. Failure to comply with the law's requirements can result in severe penalties, including substantial fines, prison sentences, and extensive restrictions on civil and political rights. Over the years, the law has been progressively tightened, expanding its scope to include individuals and informal associations, and broadening the definitions of 'political activity' and 'foreign influence'.
Shlosberg's Stance and Ongoing Legal Battles
Lev Shlosberg is recognized as one of the few opposition figures who have remained in Russia despite openly criticizing the country's actions, particularly the war in Ukraine. He has consistently voiced his opposition to the conflict, describing it as a 'tragedy' and advocating for peace.
This recent sentencing is not Shlosberg's first encounter with Russia's restrictive laws. He has previously faced fines for violating 'foreign agent' regulations and for allegedly 'discrediting' the Russian military. Currently, he remains under house arrest as part of a separate criminal investigation for 'discrediting' the Russian military, following his participation in a public debate where he characterized the war as 'bloody chess'. This house arrest order was issued in June 2025. His political career has also seen challenges, including being barred from elections due to alleged connections with Alexei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation.

This is a blatant crackdown on dissent. Shlosberg is a hero for standing up.

While the 'foreign agent' law clearly targets opposition figures, many countries do have disclosure requirements for foreign-funded political activities. The main issue here is the overly broad definition and politically motivated enforcement.

Community service for a label? This is absurd. They just want to intimidate him.

Another brave voice silenced by an authoritarian regime. The world needs to pay attention.

Foreign influence must be controlled. Every sovereign nation has that right.
