TotalEnergies and Data4 Ink Major Renewable Energy Deal in Spain
TotalEnergies and Data4, a prominent European data center operator, announced on November 4, 2025, the signing of a 10-year agreement for the supply of renewable electricity to Data4's facilities in Spain. This Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is set to commence in January 2026 and will provide a total volume of 610 GWh of clean energy over its duration.
The electricity, described as 'Clean Firm Power', will be generated by Spanish wind and solar farms with a combined capacity equivalent to 30 MW, which are slated to begin production soon. This initiative underscores both companies' commitment to sustainable energy practices and the decarbonization of industrial operations.
Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Data Infrastructure
The agreement is a significant step for Data4, which plans to invest nearly €2 billion by 2030 to expand its campuses in Spain. This substantial investment highlights the growing demand for data center services, particularly with the accelerating advancements in artificial intelligence.
François Sterin, Chief Operation Officer at Data4, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, 'This agreement reaffirms Data4's commitment to renewable energy which is more crucial than ever as the race for AI accelerates and the energy capacity required for all data centers in Spain is expected to more than triple by 2030.' He added that securing such a contract is strategic for meeting demand and positioning Madrid as a leading digital hub in Europe.
TotalEnergies' Commitment to Green Energy Solutions
For TotalEnergies, this PPA further solidifies its position as a key partner in industrial decarbonization. The company will supply Data4's facilities with a stable and predictable electricity profile, ensuring a long-term supply of green power.
Sophie Chevalier, Senior Vice President Flexible Power & Integration at TotalEnergies, noted that the company's 'Clean Firm Power' solutions are 'specifically designed to meet our clients' requirements in terms of cost, consumption profile, and environmental commitment.' She also highlighted that these solutions leverage TotalEnergies' integrated power portfolio, combining renewable and flexible assets.
Broader Implications and Future Outlook
This agreement follows similar contracts TotalEnergies has signed with other major companies globally, including STMicroelectronics, Saint-Gobain, Air Liquide, Amazon, and Microsoft, showcasing its ability to develop tailored renewable energy solutions.
Data4, which operates in six European countries, aims to fully integrate renewable energy across all its locations. The partnership with TotalEnergies is a direct affirmation of this pledge, contributing to a more sustainable future for the high-demand data center industry.

Securing long-term renewable supply is smart business for Data4, yet the article doesn't fully address the environmental impact of the data center expansion itself, regardless of power source.

30 MW is a drop in the ocean for a company like TotalEnergies. What about their oil?
