Heroic Actions Avert Further Tragedy on LNER Service
Samir Zitouni, a 48-year-old customer experience host for London North Eastern Railway (LNER), has been lauded as a hero after his courageous intervention during a mass stabbing attack on a train in Cambridgeshire on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Zitouni, who has served LNER for over 20 years, sustained critical injuries while protecting passengers from the assailant.
The incident unfolded on an LNER service traveling from Doncaster to London King's Cross. The attacker, identified as Anthony Williams, 32, boarded the train at Peterborough railway station around 19:30 GMT and began indiscriminately assaulting passengers.
Details of the Attack and Zitouni's Intervention
Police reports and CCTV footage from the train confirm that Samir Zitouni 'blocked' the attacker, notably stepping between the assailant and a young girl to shield her from harm. This selfless act resulted in Zitouni suffering severe wounds to his head and neck. British Transport Police Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy stated that Zitouni's actions were 'nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved many people's lives'.
The first emergency call was received by Cambridgeshire Constabulary at 19:39 GMT. Within minutes, the train made an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon railway station, where armed police arrived at 19:44 GMT. The train driver, Andrew Johnson, was also praised for diverting the train to Huntingdon, allowing emergency services swift access.
Victims and Suspect Information
A total of 11 people, including Samir Zitouni, were taken to hospital for treatment. Initially, nine of the injured were believed to have sustained life-threatening injuries. As of recent updates, seven individuals have been discharged, while Zitouni and three other passengers remain hospitalized in stable, though for Zitouni, critically unwell, conditions.
The suspect, Anthony Williams, a British national from Peterborough, has been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder related to the train incident. He also faces an additional charge of attempted murder in connection with a separate incident at Pontoon Dock DLR station on the same day, and one count of actual bodily harm for assaulting a police officer while in custody. Authorities have ruled out a terrorist motive, confirming that Williams acted alone.
Widespread Praise for Bravery
Samir Zitouni's extraordinary bravery has garnered widespread commendation from various officials and his employer. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander remarked, 'Sam went to work on Saturday morning to do his job. He left a hero. His remarkable quick thinking and selfless action saved lives, and he has demonstrated bravery beyond measure.' This story showcases the best of humanity in Samir, but also the worst in the attacker. We need to understand what drives such individuals to commit these acts, beyond just praising the response.

I'm so angry this happened. No one should fear a train journey.

The LNER staff and police deserve commendation for their quick intervention. Still, the fact that 11 people were injured despite their efforts suggests that current security measures on trains might need a thorough review.

While we rightly celebrate Samir's bravery and the swift emergency response, this incident highlights a worrying trend of increasing public aggression. We need to look at prevention strategies, not just reactions.

It's inspiring to read about someone so courageous, yet the article also makes you wonder about the psychological impact on all involved, including the hero himself. The road to recovery for all victims will be long.
