Brazil's Sugar Prices Drop Sharply Following Conab's Upward Revision of 2025/26 Production Forecast

Sugar Prices Plunge Amidst Increased Production Outlook

Global sugar prices settled sharply lower on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, primarily driven by an updated outlook for higher sugar production in Brazil. The National Supply Company (Conab), Brazil's crop forecasting agency, recently raised its estimate for the country's 2025/26 sugar production, signaling an abundant supply that has pressured the market. March NY world sugar #11 (SBH26) closed down -0.43 (-2.94%), while December London ICE white sugar #5 (SWZ25) fell by -9.90 (-2.34%). These movements pushed NY sugar to a 5-year nearest-futures low and London sugar to a 4.75-year low last Thursday, October 30, 2025.

Conab Revises 2025/26 Production Estimate Upwards

Conab's latest assessment, released on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, increased its Brazil 2025/26 sugar production estimate to 45 million metric tons (MMT), up from a previous forecast of 44.5 MMT. This upward revision contributes significantly to the bearish sentiment in the sugar market. Earlier in the season, Conab's first estimate for the 2025-26 crop, which officially began on April 1, projected 45.9 MMT, a 4% increase from the prior season. Despite some earlier adjustments, the current forecast indicates a robust output for the world's largest sugar producer and exporter.

Strategic Shift Towards Sugar Production Fuels Supply

The anticipated increase in Brazilian sugar output is largely attributed to a strategic shift by mills to prioritize sugar production over ethanol. This decision is influenced by more attractive international sugar prices compared to domestic ethanol prices. Brazilian mills have also increased investments in sugar crystallizing capacity, with market participants expecting these efforts to materialize this season. Even with a projected 2% decrease in sugarcane crushing for the 2025-26 season due to unfavorable weather conditions, such as a lack of rainfall and high temperatures in the center-south region, the higher allocation of sugarcane to sugar production is driving the overall increase in sugar output. For instance, the share of cane used for sugar is forecast to rise to 52.1%, up from 48.1% in the previous season, according to agribusiness consultancy Datagro.

Global Surplus Projections and Market Reaction

The outlook for higher Brazilian production has amplified concerns about a global sugar surplus, further pressuring prices. BMI Group projected a global 2025/26 sugar surplus of 10.5 MMT, while Covrig Analytics estimated a surplus of 4.1 MMT. The USDA, in its May 22, 2025, report, projected global 2025/26 sugar production to climb +4.7% year-on-year to a record 189.318 MMT. Additionally, the prospect of higher sugar exports from India, driven by abundant monsoon rains and increased planted cane acreage, is also contributing to the negative sentiment in the global sugar market.

Why are we encouraging more sugar production? Unhealthy!

Conab's revised forecast provides useful market transparency, which is good for traders, but such significant price drops can lead to panic selling and disproportionately affect less resilient market participants. A more gradual adjustment might be healthier for the market.

Excellent! Finally, some relief from rising food costs.

While lower sugar prices might benefit consumers in the short term, this sharp drop could devastate smaller Brazilian sugar cane farmers. Long-term market stability requires a more balanced approach to production.

Great news for consumers! Lower prices at the grocery store.

Increased global sugar supply could help combat food inflation in some regions, yet the environmental impact of expanding sugar cane cultivation and processing shouldn't be ignored. Sustainable practices are crucial, even with high production.
