Presidential Recognition for Global Achievement
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday, November 3, 2025, received Professor Ademola Adenle, a distinguished Nigerian scholar and sustainability expert, at the State House in Abuja. The President congratulated Professor Adenle for being the inaugural recipient of the prestigious World Academy of Sciences–M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace, acknowledging the significant honor he brought to Nigeria. The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari (CON).
Pioneering Contributions to Food Security and Sustainability
President Tinubu specifically commended Professor Adenle's extensive work in various critical fields, including agricultural innovation policy, biosciences, renewable energy, and public health. His efforts are particularly focused on developing sustainable solutions for rural and marginalized populations across Africa and beyond. Professor Adenle currently serves as the Senior Special Adviser on Agricultural Innovation in Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
The Prestigious M.S. Swaminathan Award
The World Academy of Sciences–M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace is a new international honor, widely described as a 'mini Nobel Peace Prize'. Professor Adenle made history as its first-ever recipient. The award was formally presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India on August 7, 2025, during the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, India. Established by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the award commemorates the late Professor M.S. Swaminathan, renowned as the 'Father of India's Green Revolution', whose pioneering work transformed India's food systems and inspired agricultural innovations globally. The award recognizes individuals from developing countries who have made outstanding contributions to:
- Food security
- Sustainable agriculture
- Peacebuilding
It includes a USD 25,000 monetary award and a medal.
Future Initiatives for Rural Empowerment
During his reception, Professor Adenle also announced his plans to launch the Women in Biosciences Initiative. This program aims to enhance rural agricultural productivity through training, entrepreneurship, and innovation. The initiative will also address critical public health concerns such as malnutrition and waterborne diseases, and promote the adoption of renewable energy solutions, particularly solar power, to combat energy poverty.

It's excellent that global attention is being drawn to sustainable agriculture and food security through Professor Adenle's work. Yet, the persistent issues of malnutrition and waterborne diseases mentioned in the article highlight that while individual efforts are laudable, the scale of the challenges still demands much more comprehensive, national-level action.

It's encouraging to see a Nigerian scholar receive such a prestigious international award for sustainability efforts. However, we need to ensure these individual accolades translate into broad, systemic change supported by government policy, not just ceremonial recognition.

While Professor Adenle's work in agricultural innovation is clearly impactful and worthy of recognition, the article focuses heavily on the award itself. I'd be more interested in seeing concrete examples of how his role as Special Adviser has already improved conditions for rural populations.

Receiving an award described as a 'mini Nobel Peace Prize' is undoubtedly a great honor for Professor Adenle and Nigeria. However, attributing this individual achievement solely to presidential commendation might overshadow the years of independent research and dedication that led to this global recognition.
