Diplomatic Row Erupts at APEC Summit
A significant diplomatic dispute has emerged between China and Japan following actions taken by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in Gyeongju, South Korea. China has lodged 'stern representations' and 'strong protests' with Japan, characterizing Takaichi's conduct regarding Taiwan as a severe violation of established diplomatic principles.
The controversy stems from Prime Minister Takaichi's meeting with Lin Hsin-i, Taiwan's presidential adviser, on the sidelines of the APEC gathering on October 31 and November 1, 2025. Following these interactions, Takaichi posted photos and comments on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), referring to Lin Hsin-i as 'Senior Advisor to the Presidential Office of Taiwan' and expressing her hope for deeper cooperation between Japan and Taiwan.
China's Strong Condemnation
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement on November 1 and 2, 2025, condemning Takaichi's actions. Beijing asserted that the Japanese leader 'deliberately met with the personnel of the authorities of China's Taiwan region' and 'hyped it on social media.' China views these actions as a direct challenge to the 'one-China principle,' the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, and the basic norms of international relations.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that Takaichi's actions sent a 'gravely wrong signal' to 'Taiwan independence' forces and were 'egregious in nature and impact.' China reiterated that the Taiwan question is an internal affair, central to China's core interests, and constitutes a 'red line that must not be crossed.' The spokesperson also highlighted Japan's 'long history of colonial rule over Taiwan,' emphasizing Japan's 'undeniable historical responsibilities' and the need for 'extra prudence' on the matter.
Highest Level of Diplomatic Protest
The term 'stern representations' used by China signifies the highest level of protest in Chinese diplomacy. Beijing urged Tokyo to 'reflect on and address its wrongdoings, take concrete measures to undo the negative impact, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, and act on its statement of building a constructive and stable China-Japan relationship fit for the new era.'
During her separate 30-minute meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC summit, Prime Minister Takaichi reportedly emphasized the importance of stability across the Taiwan Strait for the international community. She also raised Japan's concerns regarding China's military activities in the South China Sea, human rights issues, and tensions in the East China Sea.

While Takaichi's meeting with Lin Hsin-i could be seen as challenging Beijing, it also highlights the growing international support for Taiwan's participation in global affairs. Both sides need to find ways to communicate without resorting to such strong diplomatic condemnations.

China's historical claim on Taiwan is deeply rooted, yet Taiwan has developed into a vibrant democracy with its own distinct identity. Finding a path forward that respects both historical context and current realities is incredibly complex.
