ISRO Launches India's Heaviest Naval Communication Satellite, CMS-03 (GSAT-7R)

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone today, November 2, 2025, with the successful launch of CMS-03, also known as GSAT-7R. This advanced naval communication satellite, weighing approximately 4,410 kilograms, is India's heaviest communication satellite to be launched from Indian soil into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). The launch took place at 5:26 PM IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

The mission utilized ISRO's powerful Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3-M5), affectionately nicknamed 'Bahubali' for its heavy-lift capabilities. The 24-hour countdown for the launch commenced on November 1, culminating in a precise liftoff that marks a crucial step in enhancing India's space-based communication infrastructure.

Enhancing Naval Communication Capabilities

The primary objective of CMS-03 (GSAT-7R) is to provide secure, multi-band communication services exclusively for the Indian Navy. This state-of-the-art satellite is designed to replace the aging GSAT-7 'Rukmini' satellite, significantly upgrading the Navy's communication network.

• Multi-band communication: Operates across UHF, S, C, and Ku bands to facilitate voice, video, and data transmission.
• Extensive coverage: Provides comprehensive telecommunication coverage across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), extending up to 2,000 km from India's coastline, and also serves the Indian landmass.
• Secure links: Ensures secure and uninterrupted connectivity between the Navy's ships, submarines, aircraft, and Maritime Operations Centres, bolstering network-centric warfare capabilities.
• Indigenous development: The satellite is entirely indigenously designed and developed, showcasing India's growing competence in high-end satellite technologies.

The Power of LVM3-M5

The LVM3-M5 rocket, previously known as GSLV Mk III, is ISRO's most powerful operational launch vehicle. This mission marks its fifth operational flight and demonstrates its increasing reliability and capacity to launch heavy payloads.

The 43.5-meter-tall, 642-tonne, three-stage rocket successfully placed CMS-03 into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) with an apogee of approximately 29,970 km and a perigee of 170 km. The satellite will then use its onboard Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) to maneuver into its final geostationary orbit.

The LVM3 has a proven track record, having previously launched the historic Chandrayaan-3 mission in July 2023, which made India the first country to successfully land near the Moon's south pole.

Strategic Implications for India

The launch of CMS-03 (GSAT-7R) is a critical step towards strengthening India's maritime domain awareness and defense communication infrastructure. The project, contracted in June 2019 for ₹1,589 crore (approximately US$225.65 million), underscores India's commitment to self-reliance in strategic space technologies under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision.
