Call for Humanitarian Action
The Muslim Coordination Council (KRM), a leading German Muslim organization based in Cologne, issued a strong appeal to the German government on Friday, October 31, 2025. The group urged authorities to facilitate the entry of injured and traumatized children from the Gaza Strip into Germany for urgent medical and psychological treatment. Ali Mete, spokesperson for the KRM, stated that providing such assistance and protection is a 'moral duty' and that anything less would 'contradict their understanding of humanity and compassion'.
Gaza Children's 'Indescribable Suffering'
Mete underscored the dire situation faced by children in Gaza, describing their suffering as 'indescribable'. Many have sustained severe injuries from attacks, lost family members, and are left isolated amidst the devastation. He emphasized that these children are not only physically wounded but also 'deeply traumatized'. According to figures from UNICEF, at least 61,000 children have reportedly been killed or maimed since October 2023, with one child affected every 17 minutes. Many have also been traumatized, orphaned, and displaced multiple times within the besieged territory.
Government's Stance and Challenges
The KRM's call comes in the context of the German government's previous reluctance to accept similar proposals. The Federal Interior Ministry has reportedly rejected offers from several German cities, including Hanover, Düsseldorf, Bremen, Leipzig, Bonn, Frankfurt, and Kiel, to take in injured Gazan children. The ministry cited the 'highly unstable and unpredictable' situation in Gaza, along with complications involving Israeli and Egyptian authorities regarding exit permits. Logistical challenges, such as verifying identities, assessing security risks, arranging family accompaniment, covering costs, and determining realistic return options, were also highlighted. The ministry suggested that supporting medical treatment locally in Gaza would be more effective. Deputy Foreign Minister Serap Guler of the CDU also commented that bringing children to Germany 'doesn't help the people themselves' and that motivating regional countries for acceptance is more beneficial.
Broader German Humanitarian Efforts
Despite the government's reservations regarding direct transfers, Germany remains a significant contributor to humanitarian aid in Gaza. Since October 2023, the Federal Foreign Office has allocated over 335 million euros for the occupied Palestinian territories, with approximately 90 percent directed to Gaza. This aid supports the procurement and distribution of essential supplies like food, medical provisions, and water treatment facilities through organizations such as UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), and UNRWA. Germany has also participated in humanitarian airdrops to deliver aid.

The moral imperative to help is clear, and the KRM's call highlights immense suffering. Yet, the government's concerns about exit permits and verifying identities are valid, suggesting that a coordinated international approach might be more effective than unilateral action.

I understand the KRM's compassion and the urgent need for medical care for these children. But bringing them to Germany without clear plans for their future or family integration could create new problems, despite the best intentions.

Germany already sends massive aid. This request is unrealistic.

KRM is absolutely right. We can't stand by while children are dying and traumatized.

Logistics nightmare! And who pays? Focus on aid on the ground.
