Theakston's and Swinkels UK Forge Strategic Sales Partnership to Expand UK On-Trade Presence

New Alliance to Strengthen UK Beer Market Presence

T&R Theakston, the independent family brewer from Masham, North Yorkshire, has announced a significant strategic on-trade sales partnership with Swinkels UK, a subsidiary of the Netherlands-based Royal Swinkels. This collaboration, set to launch on November 3, 2025, is designed to enhance national coverage and provide UK pub and bar operators with a broader and more diverse selection of world-class beers.

The agreement brings together two independent family businesses with a combined brewing heritage spanning over 500 years, sharing values of independence, craftsmanship, and long-term commitment. Under the terms of this open-ended arrangement, Theakston's will represent Swinkels' extensive portfolio within the UK on-trade market, driving strategic development and expanding reach across both free trade and national accounts.

Expanded Portfolio and Enhanced Representation

The partnership will see Theakston's established cask and keg range, which includes popular beers such as Old Peculier and Theakston Best Bitter, complemented by a selection of distinctive brands from Swinkels. The Swinkels' offerings to be represented include:

  • Fruitage by Rodenbach (Belgian Fruit Beer)
  • Bavaria (global pilsner)
  • La Trappe Trappist beers
  • Uiltje Brewing's brews, such as Juicy Lucy NEIPA

This expanded portfolio aims to offer customers greater choice, depth, and quality across various beer styles. The collaboration will also enable Theakston's to increase its number of field-based representatives, thereby strengthening the national representation of both brands throughout the UK's on-trade.

Statements from Leadership

Simon Theakston, Chairman of T&R Theakston, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, 'Our portfolios perfectly complement each other, and this partnership enables us to offer a broader, more diverse selection to our customers while growing our national footprint together.' He further noted that the partnership relates exclusively to the UK on-trade market, with Theakston's international business continuing to be managed independently.

Gijs Swinkels, Chief Commercial Officer of Royal Swinkels, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the shared values between the two brewers. 'As two independent, family-run brewers, we share the same approach to quality, service and long-term commitment. Together we will strengthen our UK presence and deliver more value to customers,' Swinkels commented.

Future Outlook

The alliance is expected to significantly bolster both brewers' capabilities to serve the entire UK on-trade market. It combines Swinkels' diverse international range and brewing expertise with Theakston's deep trade relationships and established reputation. Customers can anticipate the same high-quality service, now with an even wider and more varied offering. The partnership marks a new chapter for both breweries, focusing on expanding brand access, enhancing customer service, and establishing a dynamic nationwide presence in the UK on-trade.

Hope this doesn't dilute Theakston's unique brand identity.

Don't need more foreign beers pushing out British classics.

It's good to see Theakston's expanding their reach and offering more variety, but I hope they don't lose focus on their core traditional British ales.

Increased representation and an expanded portfolio sound like great business growth. Still, the long-term impact on the pricing and availability of their classic beers needs to be watched closely.
