Hostage Situation Unfolds in Powai
A tense hostage situation gripped Mumbai's Powai area on Thursday, October 30, 2025, when 19 individuals, including 17 children, were held captive at R.A. Studio in the Mahavir Classic building. The captor, identified as Rohit Arya, 50, allegedly lured the children, aged between 10 and 15 years, to the studio under the pretext of auditions for a web series.
The incident began around 1:30 p.m. when the Powai police station received a distress call. Arya was reportedly armed with an airgun, chemicals, and a lighter, threatening to harm the hostages and set the premises ablaze if his demands were not met.
Captor's Motive and Demands
During the standoff, Rohit Arya released a video stating his intentions were to ask 'moral and ethical questions' and speak to certain individuals. He claimed the drastic action was due to alleged unpaid dues of approximately ₹2 crore (₹20 million) from the Maharashtra education department for a government project known as the 'Let's Change - PLA Swachhata Monitor' or 'Swachhata Monitor'. Arya insisted, 'I am not a terrorist, nor do I have any demand of money. I want to make simple conversations and for that reason I have taken hostage of these children.' However, the Maharashtra government has since denied these allegations, citing irregularities in Arya's organization's collection of funds.
Dramatic Rescue Operation
The Mumbai Police, along with the Quick Response Team (QRT), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, and Fire Brigade, swiftly responded to the scene. Negotiations were attempted with Arya, but as they made no headway, a police team initiated a tactical entry. Officers gained access to the studio through a bathroom window after cutting a grill. During the operation, Arya reportedly fired his airgun, prompting police to retaliate. He sustained a bullet injury to the chest and was rushed to a hospital, where he was later declared dead.
All Hostages Safe
The rescue operation, which lasted for nearly three hours, successfully concluded with all 19 hostages, including the 17 children and two adults (one of whom was a senior citizen), being safely evacuated. They were immediately taken for medical check-ups before being reunited with their families. Deputy Commissioner of Police Datta Nalawade stated, 'It was a challenging operation, because we were negotiating with him without any positive outcome... To save the children's lives was our priority.' The case has been transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch for further investigation.

Did they have to kill him? What about the unpaid dues he mentioned?

It's a huge relief that all the hostages are safe, and the police certainly acted under immense pressure. However, the claims of unpaid dues from the government shouldn't be ignored; that's a serious underlying issue.

Incredible work by Mumbai Police! All children safe is what matters.

It's a relief to know the children are safe, and the police deserve credit for the rescue. Still, the fact that someone felt driven to such extreme measures, even with an airgun, highlights deeper societal or governmental failures that need investigation.

The quick action by law enforcement to free the children is commendable and averted a greater tragedy. However, the circumstances surrounding the captor's motive, particularly the alleged government debt, warrant a thorough and independent inquiry to prevent future incidents.
