Turkey Initiates Mass Production of Altug Armored Vehicles Alongside Altay Tanks

Turkey Boosts Domestic Defense Capabilities with New Production Launch

Turkey has commenced the full-scale production of its next-generation Altuğ 8x8 armored combat vehicles and Altay main battle tanks. The announcement was made by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on October 28, 2025, during the inauguration of BMC's new armored vehicle production complex in Kahramankazan, Ankara. This strategic move aims to significantly enhance the Turkish Land Forces' operational flexibility and reduce foreign dependency in defense.

The newly established BMC facility is slated to produce eight Altay tanks and ten Altuğ 8×8 armored combat vehicles per month. This coordinated production launch signals a comprehensive modernization effort, pairing heavy tracked armor with agile wheeled platforms for future military operations.

The Altay Main Battle Tank: A Fourth-Generation Powerhouse

The Altay tank, named in honor of Army General Fahrettin Altay, is a fourth-generation main battle tank designed to meet the modern battlefield requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces. Initially designed by Otokar, its revised design and production are now handled by BMC, with design assistance and technology transfer from South Korea's Hyundai Rotem.

Key features of the Altay tank include:

  • Main Armament: A 120 mm 55 caliber smoothbore gun, manufactured by MKE under license.
  • Armor: Roketsan's advanced composite and reactive armor, complemented by Aselsan's AKKOR active protection system.
  • Engine: The initial T1 variants will utilize a South Korean HD Hyundai Infracore DV27K 1,500 hp diesel engine and SNT Dynamics EST15K transmission. Future T2 variants, expected by late 2026 or early 2027, will integrate BMC Power's indigenous BATU V12 1,500 hp engine and transmission.
  • Mobility: Capable of reaching speeds of 65 km/h on road and 45 km/h off-road, with a combat weight of 65-66 tonnes.
The first three Altay tanks were officially delivered to the Turkish Armed Forces on the day of the announcement. The overall plan is to deliver 250 units, comprising 85 T1 and 165 T2 variants.

Altuğ 8x8 Armored Vehicles: Versatility and Protection

The Altuğ 8x8 armored vehicle is a modular, high-mobility, and mine-protected wheeled platform designed for diverse combat roles. It is offered in multiple configurations, including an Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) equipped with an unmanned 35 mm turret (such as the Aselsan Korhan/SARP 35), an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC), and a 105 mm fire-support variant.

Key specifications of the Altuğ 8x8 include:

  • Engine: Typically powered by a Caterpillar C13 diesel engine generating approximately 700-711 horsepower, paired with an Allison 4000 Series transmission.
  • Performance: Achieves a maximum speed of up to 110 km/h and boasts an operational range exceeding 800 km.
  • Protection: Features a V-shaped hull for enhanced resistance against mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and modular armor designed to meet STANAG 4569 protection levels. It also includes a CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) protection system.
  • Capacity: Accommodates a crew of three and up to nine dismounts, totaling 12 personnel.
The Altuğ 8x8 is noted for its high indigenousness rate, with up to 80% of its components manufactured in Turkey. First deliveries of the Altuğ 8x8 are scheduled for 2027.

Strategic Vision for Defense Autonomy

President Erdogan emphasized that this production launch is a crucial step towards Turkey's goal of achieving full self-sufficiency and independence in its defense industry. The new BMC industrial complex, spanning 840,000 square meters with a 63,000-square-meter closed production area, is expected to employ over 1,500 qualified personnel. This initiative underscores Turkey's commitment to reducing its reliance on foreign suppliers, with foreign defense dependency reportedly falling below 20%.

These tanks are too expensive and unnecessary for our needs.

Another pet project for Erdogan's legacy. At what cost?

It's great to see high-tech manufacturing jobs created and a push for defense autonomy. However, such significant military investment could be better spent on social programs or infrastructure development.

While domestic production is a positive step for sovereignty, the initial reliance on foreign engines for the Altay tanks shows there's still a journey towards full self-sufficiency. It's a start, but not entirely independent yet.

Is this for defense or regional aggression? Worrisome.

The technological advancements showcased in these vehicles are certainly impressive for Turkey's engineering capabilities. However, the true test will be their performance in real-world scenarios and whether the indigenous components can truly match international standards consistently.

Still relying on foreign engines. "Indigenous" is a stretch.

Modernizing the armed forces is important for national security in a volatile region. Yet, the scale of this production might be seen as provocative by neighbors, potentially escalating regional tensions rather than ensuring peace.
