Major Investment to Boost Production in Minas Gerais
McCain Foods, a global leader in prepared potato products, announced on October 29, 2025, a substantial investment of R$1.8 billion (Brazilian Reais) for the expansion of its manufacturing facility in Araxá, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This significant capital injection represents McCain's largest historical investment in the region and is projected to generate more than 350 new jobs, alongside involving over 1,000 professionals in the agricultural sector.
Strategic Expansion to Meet Growing Demand
The expansion project at the Araxá plant is designed to significantly enhance McCain's production capabilities in Brazil. It includes the addition of a new French fry production line and a pre-formed products line. These additions aim to meet the rising demand for McCain's products with greater local agility, ensuring continued support for regional customers across various channels, including Retail, Cash & Carry, and Food Service, particularly the Fast-Food segment. The new production line is anticipated to commence operations in the second half of 2027. Additionally, the expansion encompasses the construction of new storage facilities for raw potatoes to ensure a continuous supply of high-quality products throughout the year, and an increase in cold storage capacity for frozen goods.
Brazil: A Key Growth Market for McCain
Brazil is increasingly recognized as a strategic priority for McCain Foods, with the country 'on track to become the third-largest market for frozen French fries globally,' according to Aluizio Periquito Neto, Managing Director of the McCain Brazil group. This investment underscores the importance of the Brazilian market to McCain's business and its ambition for consistent and responsible growth. McCain has steadily strengthened its presence in Brazil over recent years, including the inauguration of its first local factory in Araxá in 2022 and the full acquisition of Forno de Minas in 2023. The company has been present in Brazil for over 35 years, expanding its operations through strategic acquisitions like Sérya and Forno de Minas.
Economic and Social Impact
Beyond bolstering McCain's operational footprint, the expansion is expected to deliver considerable socioeconomic benefits to the Araxá region. The creation of over 350 direct jobs at the facility, coupled with the involvement of more than 1,000 professionals in the agricultural supply chain, will provide significant employment opportunities and stimulate the local economy. This commitment reflects McCain's long-term vision for growth and its dedication to contributing to the economic development of the communities where it operates.

What about the massive water footprint for all those potatoes? Environmental cost will be huge.

More local production means fresher, more available products for consumers. Love it!

It's encouraging to see a major company investing heavily and bringing jobs to the region. Yet, I hope this expansion also comes with robust community development programs and ensures fair wages beyond just the direct employment numbers.

While this R$1.8 billion investment signifies strong economic confidence in Brazil, promoting increased consumption of processed foods could have broader public health implications that shouldn't be ignored.

Increased production of fast food items isn't a benefit, it's a public health concern disguised as progress.
