A13 Luegbrücke Implements Long-Term Traffic Restrictions and Reconstruction Project

Extensive Traffic Restrictions Begin on A13 Luegbrücke

As of January 1, 2025, the Luegbrücke on Austria's A13 Brenner motorway has implemented substantial traffic restrictions, reducing traffic to a single lane in both directions. This critical measure was necessitated by bridge inspection results, which indicated that the over 55-year-old structure had reached the end of its service life and required extensive renovation and new construction to ensure long-term safety and structural integrity.

The 1,800-meter-long Luegbrücke, located south of Innsbruck near Gries am Brenner, is a vital link between Austria and Italy. The Austrian highway company ASFINAG is overseeing the project, which is projected to last until the end of 2030.

Flexible Lane Management and Heavy Vehicle Regulations

While single-lane traffic is the standard operating mode, a temporary second lane will be activated on approximately 180 days per year to manage periods of heavy traffic. This flexible system aims to alleviate congestion during peak travel times.

Specific regulations are in place for heavy goods vehicles. All vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons, including trucks, buses, and motorhomes, are required to use the left, inner lane when two lanes are open. This measure is designed to concentrate the load over the stronger central sections of the bridge, thereby reducing strain on its overall structure. Furthermore, the HGV checkpoint at Brenner Nord is closed, with exceptions only for lorries destined for the rolling road terminal.

Major Reconstruction Project Underway

The traffic restrictions are part of a larger, comprehensive reconstruction effort. Construction of a new bridge parallel to the existing Luegbrücke commenced in late March 2025. The project involves a multi-stage process:

  • Erection of a new superstructure alongside the current bridge.
  • Diversion of traffic onto the new structure.
  • Demolition of the old bridge.
  • Construction of a second new bridge structure in the place of the old one.

The total order volume for this significant infrastructure project is approximately 217 million Euros.

Mitigation Measures and Information for Travelers

To minimize disruption and manage traffic flow, ASFINAG and local authorities have implemented a range of accompanying measures:

  • Driving bans have been imposed on the subordinate road network, such as the B182, to prevent drivers from attempting to bypass the motorway restrictions.
  • Dosing traffic lights and an expansion of public transport options are being utilized.
  • Additional HGV driving bans are in effect on specific days to further ease congestion.
  • Travelers can access a detailed traffic calendar and real-time information to plan their journeys effectively.
  • Increased offers for the rolling road (RoLa) are also being provided.
  • A Section Control system has been implemented on the Luegbrücke since 2025 to enhance traffic safety.

These measures aim to ensure the continued safe operation of the A13 Brenner motorway during the extensive construction period.

217 million Euros is a massive sum. I hope the project management is transparent and efficient.

A new bridge is definitely needed, considering the current structure's age and condition. However, the plan to ban local bypass roads without vastly improving public transport in the region seems short-sighted and will only create local frustration.

Investing in our future and ensuring vital links remain safe, even if it means temporary inconvenience.

It's crucial they rebuild this bridge for safety given its age, but the extensive traffic restrictions, especially for HGVs, will add significant costs and delays to supply chains across Europe. The increased RoLa offers need to be heavily promoted and subsidized.

Good to see ASFINAG prioritizing long-term infrastructure over short-term fixes.
