Icelandair Inaugurates First Direct Flights Between Miami and Reykjavik

Inaugural Flight Connects Miami and Reykjavik

On October 26, 2025, Icelandair celebrated a significant milestone with the launch of its first-ever scheduled direct flight from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Keflavík International Airport (KEF) in Reykjavik, Iceland. This new route establishes a direct air link, offering travelers increased connectivity between South Florida and the Nordic nation.

The inaugural flight departed from Miami, marking the beginning of a service that will operate three times a week. The flights from Miami to Reykjavik are scheduled for Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, continuing until May 3, 2026. The service from Reykjavik to Miami will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Enhanced Transatlantic Connectivity

The new route is operated by Icelandair's Airbus A321LR aircraft, configured to accommodate 187 passengers, including 22 in Saga Premium and 165 in Economy Class. The flight duration is approximately 7 hours and 40 minutes for the eastbound journey from Miami to Reykjavik.

This expansion makes Miami International Airport the only airport in Florida to offer nonstop flights to all five Scandinavian countries, and Reykjavik becomes MIA's 18th European destination. For Icelandair, Miami represents its 19th gateway in North America, further solidifying its transatlantic network.

Statements from Leadership and Travel Benefits

Bogi Nils Bogason, Icelandair President and CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the new service, stating, 'We are thrilled to be opening a new gateway from Europe to sunny Florida via Iceland and from Miami to Iceland and beyond.' He added that the new long-range and fuel-efficient Airbus aircraft enable the airline to add new and exciting destinations, with Miami being a great addition that fits well into their route network, offering convenient connections via Iceland to their 38 destinations in Europe.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava also welcomed the new service, remarking, 'Icelandair's expansion into South Florida with nonstop Miami-Reykjavik flights now gives our residents direct access to the majestic natural beauty of Iceland and continues expanding our airport's connections throughout the world.'

Travelers can take advantage of Icelandair's popular Stopover program, allowing them to stay in Iceland for up to seven days at no additional airfare before continuing to their final destination. Introductory fares for the new route were offered starting at $549 for travel between October 26, 2025, and March 29, 2026.

While increased connectivity from MIA is a definite plus for travelers, I do wonder about the environmental toll of more transatlantic flights. We need sustainable solutions.

This new route certainly enhances Miami's global reach and offers exciting new travel opportunities. But, I hope the airport infrastructure can handle the additional traffic without causing more congestion for locals.

Do we really need another flight to a small country? Demand can't be that high.
