Hamas Expands Search for Israeli Hostage Bodies in Gaza with Egyptian Assistance

Expanded Search Operations Underway in Gaza

Hamas announced on Sunday, October 26, 2025, an expansion of its search operations for the bodies of remaining Israeli hostages within the Gaza Strip. This development follows the deployment of an Egyptian team, equipped with experts and heavy machinery, to assist in the recovery efforts. The move is a critical component of a fragile U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10.

A convoy of trucks, excavators, and bulldozers, provided by Egypt, entered southern Gaza on Saturday, October 25, 2025, with footage showing the equipment in Khan Younis. This marks a significant step, as Israel had previously insisted that Hamas was capable of locating and returning the bodies independently. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally approved the entry of the Egyptian technical team, whose mission is described as 'purely technical' and limited to locating the slain hostages.

Ceasefire Terms and Recovery Status

Under the terms of the ceasefire agreement, Hamas is expected to return the remains of all Israeli hostages as swiftly as possible. In exchange, Israel agreed to return 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli hostage body repatriated.

To date, Hamas has returned the bodies of 18 Israeli hostages, though some reports indicate 15 bodies have been returned, with no further returns in the past five days. Conversely, Israel has returned 195 Palestinian bodies, many of which remain unidentified.

Challenges and International Pressure

Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas's chief in Gaza and top negotiator, stated that the group has begun searching in new areas for the 13 remaining hostage bodies. He attributed the difficulties in retrieval to the 'massive destruction' across the enclave, which has buried bodies deep underground.

International pressure continues to mount for the full implementation of the agreement. U.S. President Donald Trump issued a warning on Saturday, stating he was 'watching very closely' to ensure Hamas returns more bodies within the next 48 hours. He remarked, 'Some of the bodies are hard to reach, but others they can return now and, for some reason, they are not.'

Coordinated Efforts and Future Outlook

The Egyptian team, comprising experts and heavy equipment, entered Gaza as part of broader efforts by international mediators to bolster the ceasefire. Information from both Israel and Hamas regarding the potential locations of the deceased has been provided to the Egyptian team to guide their search. The Red Cross is also involved in the search efforts in some areas.

Despite the ongoing search, Israeli officials have expressed concerns that Hamas may be deliberately delaying the return of bodies, potentially to prolong the ceasefire. The recovery of all remains is a crucial step in the broader ceasefire plan, which also includes more complex issues such as the disarmament of Hamas and the post-war governance of Gaza.

Netanyahu shouldn't have approved outside help. Hamas should be forced to return them all, immediately.

This expanded search, while necessary for humanitarian reasons, is a stark reminder of the deep distrust between the parties. The recovery of bodies is a critical component, but without addressing the broader political issues, true peace remains elusive.

Hamas is clearly trying under difficult circumstances. The focus should be on supporting their efforts, not criticizing every delay.

Hamas is clearly stalling, using the 'destruction' as an excuse. They know where these bodies are.

While the humanitarian goal of recovering bodies is paramount, the article highlights concerns that Hamas might be deliberately delaying, which undermines the fragile ceasefire's credibility. Trust is hard to build when intentions are questioned.
