NamPost Takes Over Social Grant Distribution
Namibia Post Limited (NamPost) officially assumed the role of sole service provider for social grant payouts across Namibia on October 1, 2025. This transition followed the expiration of the previous service provider's contract on September 30, 2025, with the Ministry of Finance confirming NamPost's appointment. The move aims to enhance service efficiency, improve financial inclusion, and ensure consistent access to social grants for eligible recipients.
Pilot Program Launched Ahead of Nationwide Rollout
As part of its preparations, NamPost initiated a pilot payout program on Thursday, October 9, 2025. This pilot was conducted at the Okahandja and Omitara Post Offices, with mobile payment services also deployed in Groot Aub and Otjimbingwe. The primary objective of this pilot was to 'test final operational readiness ahead of the countrywide cash payment programme, which commences on Monday, 13 October 2025,' according to NamPost statements.
Stakeholder Concerns and Past Disruptions
The transition to NamPost has been met with mixed reactions and concerns from various stakeholders. Political leaders, including the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) and the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement, have voiced worries regarding NamPost's operational capacity, potential understaffing, liquidity issues, and the accessibility of services, particularly for beneficiaries in remote areas. These concerns are amplified by previous instances of payment disruptions. In March 2025, 'chaos erupted' at NamPost's Windhoek headquarters due to technical difficulties that delayed the payment of disability and old-age grants, prompting an apology from the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare.
Scheduled Rollout and Re-registration
Following the pilot, NamPost plans a structured nationwide rollout of grant payments. Old-age grants are scheduled for payout from October 13 to 15, followed by child and disability grants from October 16 to 18. Conditional basic income grants are slated for October 20 to 21. Mobile payments are also set to begin on October 13, with details to be communicated via radio, community notice boards, and NamPost's social media platforms. Beneficiaries who miss their scheduled dates can collect grants at any branch between October 23 and 29. Additionally, re-registration of beneficiaries is being conducted concurrently with the payment program throughout October 2025.

This is a disaster waiting to happen. Remember the chaos in March 2025? Pure incompetence.

This transition is undoubtedly a massive logistical challenge, and some initial hiccups are almost expected. The most critical aspect is having clear contingency plans to support vulnerable citizens if problems arise.

Centralized payouts should reduce confusion. Hopefully, this brings much-needed stability for beneficiaries.

Remote areas will suffer the most from this. NamPost clearly lacks the necessary infrastructure.

Understaffed and liquidity issues? This entire plan sounds like a recipe for widespread payment delays.

The pilot program shows they are prepared. We should give NamPost a fair chance to succeed.
