Allegations of Complicity in Genocide
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni revealed on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, that she and two of her ministers have been reported to the International Criminal Court (ICC). The complaint alleges their complicity in genocide concerning Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Meloni made the announcement during an interview with Italian state television broadcaster RAI.
The ministers named in the complaint are Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. Meloni also indicated that Roberto Cingolani, head of the defense group Leonardo, was likely included.
Basis of the Complaint
The complaint, dated October 1, was filed by a Palestinian advocacy group and signed by approximately 50 individuals, including law professors, lawyers, and public figures.
The authors of the filing assert that by supporting the Israeli government, specifically through the supply of lethal weapons, the Italian government has become 'complicit in the ongoing genocide and the extremely serious war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian people'.
Meloni's Response and Context
Prime Minister Meloni expressed her astonishment at the accusation, stating, 'I don't believe there is another case like this in the world or in history'. She further clarified that Italy has not authorized new arms supplies to Israel since October 7, 2023, the date of the initial Hamas attack that triggered the current conflict in Gaza.
The conflict in Gaza has resulted in significant casualties, with Gaza health officials reporting over 67,000 fatalities. Israel, however, denies accusations of genocide.
ICC's Role and Previous Actions
The International Criminal Court, based in The Hague, investigates and prosecutes individuals for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. While the ICC has outstanding arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, neither has been specifically charged with genocide. As of Meloni's statement, the ICC has not confirmed the complaint against the Italian officials or initiated a formal investigation.

The ICC's involvement underscores the gravity of the situation in Gaza and the global push for accountability. However, the court's jurisdiction and the specific legal definition of 'complicity in genocide' mean this investigation will be intricate and likely lengthy.

Italy has a right to its foreign policy. This ICC complaint is absurd.

Another attempt to weaponize international law. Stand strong, PM Meloni!

Complicity? They stopped arms sales over a year ago! This is ridiculous.

Meloni's 'astonishment' doesn't negate the facts. Support has consequences.
