Saudi Giga Projects See Contract Value Soar to $196 Billion in 2025, Driven by Vision 2030 Acceleration

Unprecedented Growth in Saudi Giga Projects

The value of contracts awarded for Saudi Arabia's ambitious giga projects has reached an impressive $196 billion in 2025, marking a substantial 20 percent increase from the previous year. This significant surge, detailed in Knight Frank's fourth annual Saudi Arabia Giga Projects Report, signals a rapid acceleration in the execution phase of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 initiatives. The multi-trillion-dollar program is designed to diversify the Saudi economy away from oil dependency and foster unprecedented national economic transformation.

Vision 2030: From Planning to Execution

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman launched Vision 2030 in 2016 with the goal of transforming Saudi Arabia socially and culturally, alongside economic diversification. The current rise in contract awards demonstrates a clear shift from conceptualization to tangible development across various sectors, including new cities, major infrastructure, luxury tourism, and world-class sports venues. These projects are largely backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Key Projects Driving the Transformation

Several prominent giga projects are at the forefront of this development:

  • NEOM: This futuristic smart city, encompassing 26,500 square kilometers, aims to operate entirely on renewable energy. Construction contracts worth $24 billion have been awarded for NEOM and its sub-projects, including $470 million for Magna, $3.31 billion for Trojena (which will feature the world's largest man-made lake), $8.9 billion for The Line, and $9.3 billion for Oxagon.
  • Diriyah Gate: A $63 billion project in Riyadh, transforming Diriyah into a heritage destination centered around the At-Turaif UNESCO world heritage site.
  • The Red Sea Project and Amaala: These luxury tourism destinations along the western seaboard are part of 17 giga projects in the region, with $431.3 billion in announced investments since 2016.
  • Qiddiya: Positioned as a global entertainment, sports, and cultural hub, Qiddiya is set to redefine destination cities.
  • Riyadh's Urban Development: The capital city is a major focus, with projects like King Salman Park and the 220km Sports Boulevard aiming to position Riyadh as a global hub for business, tourism, and talent. Riyadh has accounted for 63 percent of all new jobs created in the Kingdom since 2019.

Impact on Future Development

These initiatives are projected to significantly reshape Saudi Arabia's urban landscape and economy. By 2030, the giga projects are expected to contribute to the completion of over 382,500 new homes, more than 3 million square meters of office space, in excess of 4.3 million square meters of retail space, and over 330,000 hotel rooms. The scale of these developments underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to its Vision 2030 goals, driving economic diversification and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.

The ambition behind Vision 2030 is truly impressive, aiming for a modern Saudi Arabia. Yet, the sheer scale raises questions about long-term financial viability and whether these artificial cities will truly thrive.

Another example of petro-states trying to 'greenwash' their image. Who benefits?

These projects feel unsustainable and too centralized. What about the ordinary citizens?
