The Russian Federation launched a major overnight assault on Ukraine on Sunday, October 5, 2025, deploying 53 ballistic and cruise missiles and 496 drones. The extensive attack resulted in the deaths of five civilians and caused widespread power outages across multiple regions of Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.
Casualties and Damage Across Regions
The attack claimed the lives of five people and injured numerous others. In the western Lviv region, four individuals, including a 15-year-old girl, were killed in a combined drone and missile strike. An entire family of four perished in the village of Lapaivka on the outskirts of Lviv. At least six more people sustained injuries in Lviv. The strike also left two districts of Lviv without power and temporarily suspended public transport. A business complex on the city's outskirts caught fire.
In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, one civilian woman was killed, and nine others were injured, including a 16-year-old girl. The assault destroyed residential buildings and left approximately 73,000 households in Zaporizhzhia and surrounding areas without electricity. Overall, the strikes severely damaged energy infrastructure, cutting power to over 110,000 households nationwide.
Targeted Areas and Official Statements
The overnight barrage targeted nine regions across Ukraine, including Lviv, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Vinnytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kherson, Kharkiv, Odesa, and Kirovohrad. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, stating that Russia fired 'more than 50 missiles and about 500 attack drones' and called it 'another deliberate act of terror against civilians.' He emphasized the urgent need for 'more protection and faster implementation of all defence agreements, especially on air defence,' to counter what he termed 'aerial terror.'
Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that Russia launched 'yet another barrage of missiles and drones' against the Ukrainian people. In response to the widespread assault, Russia's Defense Ministry stated that its overnight strikes targeted Ukraine's 'military-industrial complex' and energy facilities.
International Response
Following the attack, neighboring Poland scrambled fighter jets to ensure the safety of its airspace, particularly in areas close to the Ukrainian border. NATO member Poland also put its air and ground defenses on high alert.

Unacceptable brutality. Give Ukraine everything they need to win!

It's devastating to see the destruction and loss of life in Ukraine, highlighting the urgent need for air defense. Yet, we must also consider the growing global fatigue and the need for a comprehensive strategy that moves beyond just reacting to attacks.

Horrific! The world needs to send more air defense NOW. Ukraine deserves peace.

The sheer scale of this attack is appalling, and Ukraine's call for more protection is completely understandable. Still, the economic and human cost of this prolonged conflict demands a serious re-evaluation of how international pressure and aid can lead to a sustainable resolution.
