Shooting Incident Rocks Sydney's Inner West
A 60-year-old man has been arrested following a chaotic shooting incident in Croydon Park, an inner-west suburb of Sydney, Australia, on Sunday evening, October 5, 2025. The alleged gunman, identified as Artemios Mintzas, reportedly fired numerous shots from an apartment into a busy street, resulting in injuries to 16 people. The event prompted a significant police response and a lockdown of the area.
The Unfolding of Events and Casualties
Police were called to Georges River Road in Croydon Park around 7:45 PM after reports of a person indiscriminately firing from a residential unit. Initial reports suggested up to 100 shots were fired, though New South Wales Police later revised this to approximately 50 shots. Witnesses described hearing 'bang, bang, bang' and seeing 'flash-bangs and sparks and smoke,' with one office worker, Joe Azar, noting a 'surreal feeling' as a car windshield and bus stop glass shattered.
Of the 16 people injured, one man, a taxi driver in his 50s, sustained serious gunshot wounds to the neck and head and underwent emergency surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. The majority of other injuries were minor, primarily caused by shattered glass and debris as bullets struck vehicles and premises. Several individuals were also treated for shock.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
A large contingent of police, including tactical units and the Public Order and Riot Squad, swiftly responded to the scene, establishing an exclusion zone and locking down the street. There was an 'exchange of gunfire' between police and the alleged gunman before tactical officers entered the unit above a business and arrested Mintzas around 9:30 PM. He sustained minor injuries during his arrest and was taken to Bankstown Hospital under police guard before being transferred to custody. Police seized two rifles from the apartment.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon described the incident as 'serious and terrifying.' While the gunman's motive remains unclear, authorities have ruled out any links to terrorism or gang activity. Artemios Mintzas is expected to face a 'string' of firearm-related charges. The investigation into the rare mass shooting in Australia is ongoing.

The arrest was swift, which is a relief, but the fact that 16 people were injured, even if mostly by debris, shows the widespread impact and terror a single shooter can unleash.

How did a 60-year-old get two rifles and fire 50 shots? Our laws are failing!

Australia's gun laws generally keep us safe, yet this incident highlights that even with strict regulations, determined individuals can still cause immense harm. Continuous vigilance is key.

While it's reassuring this is a rare occurrence for Australia, the incident underscores that mental health issues or other factors can still lead to extreme violence. Prevention efforts need to be broad.
