Sanae Takaichi Elected LDP Leader, Poised to Become Japan's First Female Prime Minister

Takaichi Secures LDP Presidency

Sanae Takaichi, a former Economic Security Minister, was elected as the new president of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Saturday, October 4, 2025. This historic victory positions her to become Japan's first female Prime Minister, a significant development in a country that has historically ranked low in gender equality. The LDP, as the largest party in parliament, typically sees its leader assume the premiership.

Takaichi's election follows the resignation of incumbent LDP President and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on September 7, 2025. Ishiba's decision came after the LDP experienced poor performance in the 2024 general election and the 2025 House of Councillors election, resulting in the party losing its majority in both chambers of the Diet for the first time since its founding.

A Contested Race and Runoff Victory

The LDP presidential election involved five candidates, including prominent figures such as Agricultural Minister Shinjirō Koizumi, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, former Economic Minister Takayuki Kobayashi, and former Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

The election process consisted of two rounds of voting. In the first round, 295 LDP members of the Diet cast one vote each, while votes from approximately 915,600 dues-paying party members were proportionally translated into another 295 votes, totaling 590 first-round votes.

In the initial round, Takaichi led with 31.07% of the vote, followed by Koizumi with 27.84%. As no candidate secured an outright majority, Takaichi and Koizumi advanced to a runoff. In the runoff, LDP lawmakers again cast votes, and the 47 prefectural chapters of the LDP each received one vote. Takaichi ultimately secured victory with 185 votes against Koizumi's 156 votes.

Challenges Ahead for the New Leader

Takaichi, known for her conservative nationalist views and 'Japan First' policy, has made this her third bid for the party leadership. Her confirmation as Prime Minister is expected during an extraordinary session of the Diet in mid-October.

The new LDP leader faces significant challenges, including navigating a minority government, mending internal factional divides, and working to regain public trust. Key policy issues include addressing rising prices, Japan's aging population, and growing regional tensions.

Minority government? She's set up for failure. LDP is still reeling from losses.

Takaichi's victory brings a sense of strong leadership after the LDP's poor election performance. However, her challenge lies in regaining public trust and mending internal party rifts while tackling major economic hurdles.

It's encouraging to see a new leader with a clear vision, especially with the LDP's recent struggles. However, navigating a minority government with deep internal divisions will test her leadership more than ever.

Her 'Japan First' policies could isolate us. We need global cooperation, not nationalism.

The historic aspect of a female Prime Minister is certainly positive for Japan's image. Yet, the article highlights significant domestic issues like rising prices and an aging population that her policies must effectively address to truly succeed.
