Manipur BJP MLAs in Delhi to Advocate for Popular Government Amidst President's Rule

Manipur BJP Delegation Arrives in Delhi

A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from Manipur, spearheaded by former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, has reached New Delhi. The legislators commenced their journey on Saturday, October 4, 2025, with some more expected to arrive on Sunday, October 5, 2025. Their primary objective is to engage with the party's central leadership to advocate for the swift formation of a popular government in the state.

Push for Government Formation and Crisis Resolution

The visit comes as Manipur remains under President's Rule, which was imposed on February 13, 2025, following a period of intense ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023. Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had resigned on February 9, 2025, just days before the central rule was implemented. The President's Rule was subsequently extended for another six months in August 2025.

Speaking to reporters at Imphal International Airport before his departure, Mr. Singh stated that the delegation intends to apprise central leaders of the prevailing law and order situation in the state. He emphasized the need to discuss the formation of a popular government, issues related to internally displaced persons (IDPs), and matters concerning highway accessibility.

Key Leaders Involved and Expected Meetings

The delegation includes prominent BJP MLAs such as Tongbram Robindro, Heikham Dingo, and Sapam Ranjan, who accompanied N. Biren Singh. Other legislators, including Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, Thangjam Arunkumar, and Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei, had also departed for Delhi. Manipur Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, along with former minister Govindas Konthoujam and MLAs Kongkham Robindro, Sapam Kunjakeshwor, Thounaojam Shyamkumar, and Karam Shyam, are anticipated to join the group.

The MLAs are scheduled to meet BJP Northeast in-charge Sambit Patra and are seeking appointments with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President J.P. Nadda, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla is also currently in New Delhi and has held meetings with central figures, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan.

Political Landscape and Assembly Status

The 60-member Manipur Assembly remains under suspended animation, with its tenure extending until 2027, keeping alive the possibility of a political revival. Reports suggest a newfound unity among BJP legislators, with earlier factional differences reportedly set aside in favor of a collective demand for government formation, irrespective of who assumes the leadership role. This push for a popular government also comes amidst a period where the BJP's political influence in Manipur is perceived to have weakened, particularly after losing both Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 elections.

President's Rule is safer given the ongoing violence.

The newfound unity among BJP legislators is a positive internal development, but the focus must remain on the welfare of Manipur's citizens, not just political revival. A government formed without addressing core grievances may struggle to maintain long-term stability.

Bringing back an elected government is important for local representation, yet the circumstances of the previous CM's resignation and the imposition of President's Rule cannot be ignored. Any new administration needs a clear mandate and a fresh approach to governance.
