Brazil's Tropical Forests Forever Fund Named 2025 Earthshot Prize Finalist

On Saturday, October 4, 2025, Brazil's Tropical Forests Forever Fund (TFFF) was announced as a finalist for the prestigious 2025 Earthshot Prize. This recognition highlights the fund's groundbreaking approach to assigning economic value to standing forests, a critical step in global conservation efforts. Brazil has underscored its commitment to this initiative with a substantial $1 billion investment, positioning itself as a leader in innovative climate finance. The TFFF is slated for its official launch at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, in November.

The Tropical Forests Forever Fund: An Innovative Approach to Conservation

The Tropical Forests Forever Fund (TFFF) is a pioneering mechanism led by the Government of Brazil, designed to redefine how forest protection financing is structured by assigning real economic value to standing forests. Unlike traditional donation-based models, the TFFF operates as an investment fund, aiming to provide tropical countries with permanent income in exchange for the lasting protection of their forests. First announced at COP28 in Dubai in 2023, the TFFF has been developed with the support of ten countries from both the Global South and Global North, along with representatives of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs). The fund aims to establish a colossal $125 billion global investment fund, comprising $25 billion in sovereign investments and $100 billion in private investments. If successful, this initiative could safeguard over 1 billion hectares of forest across more than 70 countries. A crucial aspect of its design is the allocation of at least 20% of payments made to these countries directly to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, recognizing their vital role in forest stewardship.

Brazil's Pioneering Commitment and Global Impact

Brazil has demonstrated strong leadership by committing the first $1 billion investment to the TFFF. This commitment was announced by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during a UN event in New York last month, making Brazil the inaugural country to pledge financial resources to the initiative. President Lula emphasized Brazil's intent to 'lead by example' and urged other nations to make equally ambitious contributions to ensure the TFFF becomes operational at COP30. Beyond Brazil, several other tropical forest nations have joined the initiative, including Colombia, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Additionally, five potential investor nations—Germany, the United Arab Emirates, France, Norway, and the United Kingdom—are actively participating in shaping the mechanism. The TFFF's official launch is anticipated at COP30, scheduled to take place from November 10 to 21, 2025, in Belém, Brazil.

Earthshot Prize Recognition

The selection of the TFFF as a finalist for the 2025 Earthshot Prize underscores its potential to deliver significant environmental impact. Founded by Prince William in 2020, the Earthshot Prize is a global environmental award that recognizes and scales innovative solutions to the world's most pressing environmental challenges. The prize awards £1 million annually to five winners across five categories, known as 'Earthshots':
  • Protect and Restore Nature
  • Clean Our Air
  • Revive Our Oceans
  • Build a Waste-Free World
  • Fix Our Climate
The TFFF is a finalist in the 'Protect and Restore Nature' category. The 2025 Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony is set to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 5, just days before the commencement of COP30. This recognition by the Earthshot Prize is expected to significantly raise global awareness of the TFFF, attracting further public and private investors and amplifying its message about the vital importance of tropical forests for the planet's health and economies.

Including Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities with 20% of payments is a positive and necessary move. Still, the challenge lies in guaranteeing that these funds reach them effectively and empower their stewardship, rather than getting lost in bureaucracy.

Private investment often means private profit. Who truly benefits from this fund?

The idea of assigning economic value to standing forests is innovative, potentially unlocking new funding streams. However, ensuring that this doesn't lead to further commodification or exploitation of natural resources will be a delicate balance.

Finally, economic value for standing forests makes so much sense. A game-changer for conservation.
