A significant fire, accompanied by multiple explosions, erupted in a residential building in Mühlhausen, northwestern Thuringia, on Thursday morning, October 2, 2025. The incident, which occurred in the Schneidemühlenweg, prompted a large-scale emergency response and left two people injured. Police have launched an investigation into suspected arson.

Injuries and Extensive Damage Reported

During the intense firefighting operation, a 65-year-old resident of the house was rescued with life-threatening injuries. The individual is currently receiving intensive medical treatment at a hospital. Additionally, a firefighter sustained minor injuries while battling the blaze.

The fire not only consumed the residential building but also spread to an adjacent outbuilding, a nearby garage, and a car parked within it. Authorities estimate the total damages from the incident to exceed €100,000. The firefighting efforts involved approximately 60 emergency personnel and eight fire vehicles, with a city spokesperson describing the operation as 'very challenging'.

Arson Investigation Underway

Initial police investigations strongly suggest that the fire was deliberately set. The 65-year-old resident, who was severely injured, is currently under suspicion of having started the fire himself, leading to an investigation into severe arson. While media reports circulated about the alleged discovery of gasoline canisters distributed within the building, authorities have not officially confirmed these claims.

The criminal police (Kriminalpolizei) are continuing their extensive investigations into the cause and circumstances of the fire. Residents in the vicinity of the incident were advised to keep their windows and doors closed and to turn off ventilation and air conditioning systems as a precautionary measure during the emergency response.
