Applications Open for 2025-26 Tourism Season
The Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) has announced that applications for its Entry Permit Scheme are now open for all visitors planning to travel during the 2025-26 tourism season. This mandatory scheme, which came into effect on August 1, 2025, requires the vast majority of individuals entering the territory for either work or visitor purposes to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in advance.
Purpose and Implementation of the Entry Permit Scheme
The Entry Permit Scheme was introduced to enhance the control of access to the sensitive British Overseas Territory, strengthen environmental protection, and regulate both tourism and scientific activities. It replaces the previous system of levying landing fees with an individual permit charge, aiming to manage increasing tourism interest while supporting long-term conservation efforts. The legal framework for this system is defined by the Entry Control Ordinance 2022, which modernized existing entry control and immigration legislation.
Permit Types, Costs, and Application Process
There are two primary types of permits available: the Visitor Permit and the Work Permit. A Visitor Permit is valid for 30 days from the intended date of arrival and costs £200 per application. It can be extended for an additional 30 days if justified. The Work Permit, intended for professionals and workers, is valid for 12 months and is issued free of charge, with a possibility of a six-month extension.
Applications must be submitted through a dedicated web-based portal on the GSGSSI website. Applicants are advised to submit their requests at least 14 days prior to their first intended date of arrival. Late applications will only be considered under specific circumstances, and no applications will be approved within four days of arrival. Applications can be made individually or by an authorized person, such as a travel agent or cruise ship operator, on behalf of multiple individuals.
Required Documentation and Tourism Season
To complete an application, individuals must provide:
- A valid passport that covers the entire permit period plus an additional four weeks.
- Health insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation of remains.
- Personal details and comprehensive travel information, including arrival and departure dates and itinerary.
- For Work Permits, an employment contract is also required.
The main tourism season for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands typically spans from late October to March, coinciding with the austral summer, which is considered the optimal period for wildlife observation. Visitors are encouraged to plan their trips accordingly and secure their permits well in advance to ensure a smooth entry into this unique natural environment.

I appreciate the government's commitment to strengthening environmental protection through this scheme. My concern is whether the strict requirements, especially for health insurance, might inadvertently limit the diversity of visitors who can experience this incredible place.

It's good to see efforts to regulate tourism and support conservation in South Georgia. However, the 14-day application window and strict documentation could be a barrier for last-minute trips or less tech-savvy individuals.

The focus on preserving this unique ecosystem is commendable, and permits are a logical step. Yet, the cost combined with mandatory comprehensive insurance might make it inaccessible for budget-conscious travelers who still respect nature.
