GSGSSI Invites Tenders for New Patrol Vessel
The Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) has initiated a tender process, inviting expressions of interest for the time charter of a UK-flagged Patrol, Security and Fisheries Protection Vessel. This strategic move aims to bolster the territory's maritime capabilities in the remote Southern Ocean.
Charter Details and Vessel Requirements
The anticipated charter period for the new vessel is for ten years firm, with an option for an additional five one-year extensions, or a firm contract for fifteen years. The GSGSSI has set a target delivery date for the vessel on or before Wednesday, May 31, 2028, with delivery expected in the Falkland Islands. The contract will be based on an amended BIMCO Supplytime 2017 Charter Party. Interested parties are directed to contact offshore.london@braemar.com for further information.
The vessel is intended for a multi-purpose role, primarily focusing on patrol and fisheries protection. Additionally, it will undertake responsibilities related to transportation, security, and scientific tasks within the Scotia Sea region of the Southern Ocean. The vessel is expected to make between 8 to 10 port calls annually in Stanley, Falkland Islands.
Enhancing Maritime Security and Conservation
This tender underscores the GSGSSI's ongoing commitment to safeguarding its extensive maritime zone. The territory's Marine Protected Area (MPA), established in 2012, spans an impressive 1.24 million square kilometres, an area approximately five times the size of the United Kingdom. The patrol vessel plays a critical role in enforcing the MPA's regulations, which include vast 'no-take zones' covering 470,000 square kilometres where all fishing activity is prohibited.
The current patrol vessel, 'Pharos SG', has been instrumental in deterring and detecting Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activity, which remains a significant threat to the region's ecosystem. The new vessel will continue these vital operations, ensuring the protection of the rich marine biodiversity and supporting scientific research in one of the world's most pristine environments.

Establishing a strong presence in the Southern Ocean for scientific research is valuable, however, the article doesn't detail how the scientific tasks will be funded or what specific research priorities will be addressed by this vessel. The focus seems heavily on enforcement.

Excellent news! Protecting our oceans, especially such a pristine area, is paramount. Great initiative!

The commitment to conservation is positive and necessary for our planet's future. Yet, the long-term, fixed-term charter could limit flexibility to adapt to new environmental threats or technological advancements over such a long period.

Ten years is a lifetime in maritime tech. This rigid contract is a recipe for outdated equipment and waste.

A single vessel for 1.24 million sq km? That's just a drop in the ocean, completely ineffective.

Securing the integrity of marine protected areas is vital for biodiversity, but the article implies a significant financial outlay. It would be beneficial to see a clearer cost-benefit analysis or a breakdown of the economic impact on taxpayers versus the environmental gains.
