Record-Breaking Travel Figures Mark Golden Week
China witnessed an unprecedented travel boom during its extended Golden Week holiday in 2023, which combined the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day celebrations from September 29 to October 6. The eight-day period saw millions of people embark on domestic and international journeys, leading to sold-out attractions and record bookings across the country. This surge in activity has been widely interpreted as a strong indicator of economic recovery and robust consumer confidence in China.
According to China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the holiday recorded approximately 826 million domestic tourist trips. This figure represents a substantial 71.3% year-on-year increase compared to 2022 and a 4.1% increase over pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Domestic tourism revenue reached an impressive 753.43 billion yuan (approximately $103.14 billion USD), marking a 129.5% year-on-year increase and a 1.5% rise from 2019.
Popular Destinations and Evolving Travel Trends
The travel frenzy extended across various modes of transport and destinations. The Ministry of Transport reported a daily average of 257 million individuals in cross-regional population movement, an 11.5% increase compared to 2019. Railway networks were projected to handle 190 million trips, significantly up from 138 million in 2019, while domestic flights were expected to carry over 21 million people, an 18% increase from 2019.
Popular domestic destinations included major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Chongqing. Distant border regions like Xinjiang and Yunnan also experienced increased popularity, with tour group bookings nearly doubling compared to the previous year's National Day holiday. Historical and cultural sites, including The Forbidden City and the Longmen Grottoes, attracted significant numbers of visitors. Accommodation bookings soared, with hotel reservations for popular domestic destinations surging by 514% compared to 2019, and cities like Beijing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, and Shanghai seeing hotel booking volumes more than triple.
New trends observed during this Golden Week included a rise in independent travel over traditional group tours and the emergence of 'reverse tourism,' where travelers opted for less conventional destinations. The Asian Games, hosted in cities like Hangzhou, also spurred sports tourism.
Outbound Travel and Broader Economic Impact
Beyond domestic borders, outbound travel also saw a significant resurgence. Trip.com Group reported an eightfold increase in outbound travel demand compared to 2022. Top international destinations for Chinese travelers included Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Long-haul destinations such as Switzerland, Spain, the UK, France, and Turkey also experienced rapid growth. Border crossings averaged 1.477 million individuals daily, reaching 85.1% of 2019 levels.
The robust performance of the tourism and consumption sectors during the 2023 Golden Week provided a substantial boost to China's economy. Domestic consumption exhibited its strongest performance since 2019, signaling a strong rebound in consumer spending and contributing to the nation's overall economic recovery.

The sheer volume of travel clearly indicates robust consumer spending, which is positive for the economy. However, the environmental impact of so many people moving simultaneously is a significant concern that needs addressing.
