Royal Brunei Airlines and Japan Airlines Relaunch Codeshare Partnership

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam / Tokyo, Japan – Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) and Japan Airlines (JAL) have officially relaunched their strategic codeshare partnership, effective October 1, 2025. This renewed agreement is set to significantly enhance connectivity and travel options for passengers traveling between Japan, Brunei Darussalam, and other destinations.

Enhanced Connectivity and Travel Options

The codeshare agreement allows both airlines to place their respective flight codes on selected routes, providing travelers with increased flexibility and a more seamless travel experience. Under the initial phase of this recommenced partnership:

  • Japan Airlines (JAL) will place its 'JL' code on flights operated by Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) between Bandar Seri Begawan and Tokyo (Narita).
  • Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) will place its 'BI' code on selected domestic flights within Japan operated by Japan Airlines (JAL), covering key cities such as Osaka and Nagoya.

This expansion of network aims to improve connectivity across Southeast Asia, Australia, and Japan for international travelers.

Strategic Importance and Benefits

The recommencement of this partnership marks a significant milestone for both carriers, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties and foster tourism, business, and cultural exchanges between Japan and Brunei. The collaboration is designed to offer passengers greater convenience and a wider array of travel choices.

Captain Sabirin Hj Abd Hamid, CEO of Royal Brunei Airlines, commented on the partnership, stating, 'This partnership with Japan Airlines supports RB's network expansion strategy and enhances our guests' travel experience with greater connectivity and convenience. In these challenging times, collaborating with partners is one of best way to expand our network. We will be partnering with more airlines in the coming months to further expand RB network.'

Booking Information

Flights under the new codeshare agreement are available for purchase through various channels, including both airlines' official websites, the Royal Brunei Airlines mobile application, Preferred Travel Agents, and the RB Service Centre.

Previous Partnership History

This is not the first collaboration between the two airlines. Royal Brunei Airlines and Japan Airlines previously entered into a codeshare agreement in February 2020, which allowed JAL to offer flights between Bandar Seri Begawan and Tokyo Narita, and RB to place its code on flights to major Japanese cities including Sapporo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. The partnership had been on hiatus for over five years before its current recommencement.

The CEO mentions network expansion, which is strategic, but the article doesn't detail how this new agreement addresses the challenges that led to the previous partnership's five-year hiatus.

This codeshare will certainly benefit tourism between Japan and Brunei, yet the delayed implementation until late 2025 means immediate travel needs won't be met, which is a bit disappointing.

Enhancing travel options is a clear benefit, however, for frequent flyers, the actual value will depend heavily on competitive pricing and flight availability compared to existing direct routes.

It's good to see airlines collaborating to expand networks, but the 'relaunch' aspect suggests previous issues, making one wonder about the long-term stability of this renewed partnership.
